How much longer for guest network on BT Whole Home Wifi

Go to solution

As the subject - getting a little impatient now.

The last update of the iPhone app mentioned that the update was 'coming soon'. That was back in summer!

Are we still on track by the end of the year?

I was hoping for a Black Friday firmware treat, but no such luck ;)Woman Frustrated

Ditch the home hub. I got a TpLInk router/modem for less than £30 that has a guest network. Never looked back.

@oakserver

See

 TP Link TD-W9970 Guest network

You can use this instead of the home hub, and still use your Whole Home Wifi if you need to.

You can also restrict the priority and bandwidth of the guest network so guests cannot use up all of your bandwidth

@Keith_BeddoeYes, having a little flurry of emails.

Thanks for the suggestion re the guest network though the router. Works fine in most cases - however the whole home wifi reaches part no other router reaches (the back bedroom where the guests stay), so I have to give them the password to the main network thus allowing them to snoop !! 😞

@oakserver

True isolation would only be possible at router level. An additional guest SSID on the whole home wifi, would not give that.

I assume there is no signal from the home hub in the guest area?

I have a similar set up whereby by guest area struggles with access to the guest WiFi off my TpLInk W9970. Currently experimenting with wireless access point to extend the guest wireless network. I will report back my findings unless anyone has other suggestions?

@Devon_Dave

The problem with using a wireless access point, is if its connected to a LAN port, it will not give isolation.

You could try a wireless repeater, but performance will suffer.

A better option would be to add a wireless client in the area wher the signal is still reasonable, and wire that to a wireless access point in the area with poor coverage, making sure that the access point is on a different wireless channel than the router. If you did not want to run a cable between the two, you could use powerline adapters, provided you do not have any other powerline devices in use.

You could use a couple of TP-Link WA701 or WA801 wireless deviices. They can act as clients and access points, and ever wireless repeaters if you wanted to try that first.

If you want me to draw a diagram, then please let me know.
