Hub or Ethernet switch for BT Whole Hone wifi

Go to solution

I have only one spare port on my router and I have a 5 disc whole home system with 2 discs to be connected by Ethernet cable back to the router.

Do I need a hub or Ethernet switch to connect the 2 cables to my one spare router port?

I vaguely understand the difference but unsure which is needed or does it not matter?

Cheers

Jim

You would need an Ethernet switch to increase the number of ports on your home hub, if you are running out of ports.

This one should be suitable https://www.shop.bt.com/products/bt-5-port-gigabit-ethernet-switch-075718-8W48.html

An Ethernet hub is an old term for the earlier devices that were just Ethernet repeaters, which just replicated all of the data to every port, even though it was not needed. This caused lots of problems Smiley Wink
