Awful BT Infinity 2 Performance

Hi All,

So BT Infinity 2 offers:

Up to 76 Mbps download speed
Up to 19 Mbps upload speed

What I'm actually getting is:

~ 29 Mbps download speed

~ 10 Mbps upload speed

On top of that it's been incredibly unstable, especially in the past few days, here's just some of the outages from the technical log:

20:58:54, 05 Feb.dsl:VDSL Link Down: duration was 1222 seconds
20:37:56, 05 Feb.dsl:VDSL Link Down: duration was 3747 seconds
19:33:35, 05 Feb.dsl:VDSL Link Down: duration was 8579 seconds
17:10:07, 05 Feb.dsl:VDSL Link Down: duration was 16975 seconds
12:26:46, 05 Feb.dsl:VDSL Link Down: duration was 12108 seconds
09:04:33, 05 Feb.dsl:VDSL Link Down: duration was 24190 seconds
02:20:46, 05 Feb.dsl:VDSL Link Down: duration was 1525 seconds
01:54:55, 05 Feb.dsl:VDSL Link Down: duration was 23133 seconds
19:28:56, 04 Feb.dsl:VDSL Link Down: duration was 3343 seconds
18:32:38, 04 Feb.dsl:VDSL Link Down: duration was 6669 seconds
16:41:03, 04 Feb.dsl:VDSL Link Down: duration was 3511 seconds
15:42:05, 04 Feb.dsl:VDSL Link Down: duration was 346 seconds
15:35:53, 04 Feb.dsl:VDSL Link Down: duration was 418 seconds
15:28:18, 04 Feb.dsl:VDSL Link Down: duration was 6892 seconds
13:32:50, 04 Feb.dsl:VDSL Link Down: duration was 32 seconds
13:31:52, 04 Feb.dsl:VDSL Link Down: duration was 20353 seconds
...
05:36:59, 02 Feb. dsl:VDSL Link Down: duration was 50500 seconds
...
00:21:27, 11 Jan.dsl:VDSL Link Down: duration was 21130 seconds
...
00:37:40, 27 Dec.dsl:VDSL Link Down: duration was 438 seconds
...
12:20:13, 26 Dec.dsl:VDSL Link Down: duration was 4452 seconds
...

I've checked the connections, sockets, and microfilters as well as performing a quiet line test and that all seems fine.

Here's my router and adsl information:

adsl

I would really appreciate any help/advice about

- The constant line dropping (at least once a day at this point if not more, seems worse in the evenings - more load?)

- The terrible speeds (~38% of the "up to" download and ~52% of the "up to" upload)

Although from these statistics it looks like there's no point in having BT Infinity 2 over BT Infinity 1 (which has "up to" 52 Mbps download, "up to" 9.5 Mbps upload) because the line is so bad, I should probably downgrade.

Re: Awful BT Infinity 2 Performance

Care you using the test socket with a filter to eliminate your internal wiring as causing a problem. When connected to test socket check that there is no dial tone at any extension socket whether in use or not

Re: Awful BT Infinity 2 Performance

Thanks for your quick reply imjolly, I'll try the test socket as you suggest and report back with the results.

Re: Awful BT Infinity 2 Performance

Whilst connected to the test socket check for noise on the line. 17070 option 2. Any noise report a line fault, don't mention broadand.

Re: Awful BT Infinity 2 Performance

@imjolly@pippincpFinally got around to testing with the test socket. To make the test fairer I redid the speed tests (since this was in the morning rather than the evening).

Normal connection:

~ 32 Mbps download speed

~ 14 Mbps upload speed

info2.PNG

Test connection:

~ 32 Mbps download speed

~ 18 Mbps upload speed

info2Test.PNG

Also I couldn't hear any noise during the quiet line test on either connection.

For the test socket connection I'm getting ~42% of the "up to" download and ~94% of the "up to" upload. So although the upload speed improves, the download speed remains about the same.

Please advise on what my options are given this extremely slow download speed (compared to what is being offered) as well as the consistent line dropping.

Re: Awful BT Infinity 2 Performance

if you compare the router stats there is a significant difference in your attainable speed and noise margin when using the test socket  your connection speed has not changed and probably banded profile.  the potential for faster speed is there when using the test socket suggesting a problem either with master front plate or your internal wiring

Re: Awful BT Infinity 2 Performance

@imjollyThanks, I see what you mean looking at the "Maximum data rate" and "Noise Margin" which are

Test 1 (initial post, normal socket)

Maximum data rate: 11785 / 40586 (11.8 Mbps upload, 40.6 Mbps download)

Noise margin: 6 dB / 6.3 dB

Test 2 (normal socket)

Maximum data rate: 14914 / 41875 (14.9 Mbps upload, 41.9 Mbps download)

Noise margin: 6 dB / 6.3 dB

Test 3 (test socket)

Maximum data rate: 18826 / 59792 (18.8 Mbps upload, 59.8 Mbps download)

Noise margin: 6 dB / 10.6 dB

What would be your advice with regards to the internal wiring and how do you get out of a banded profile?

Re: Awful BT Infinity 2 Performance

I would check your extension sockets first and when you are in test socket there should be no dial tone at any extension whether in use or not

banding should release automatically but need a stable connection which you may well get now in test socket
