Billion BIPAC 7800N with BT Infinity

Go to solution

Dear Forum - I'm getting fed up with my HH6 constantly dropping out and want to use my BIPAC 7800N router. It has the latest firmware but I'm struggling with how to set it up. Do I still need to keep my HH6 connected to the phone line and then connect this to the EWAN port on the BIPAC or can I just do away with the HH6 completely? Whichever is the correct solution, please can someone help me the correct configuration and settings. Many thanks .

Welcome to this user forum.

Its only an ADSL router, that is why. You cannot use it on VDSL.

You will need to exchange it for a VDSL one.

ADSL Compliance
Compliant with ADSL Standard
   - Full-rate ANSI T1.413 Issue 2
   - G.dmt (ITU G.992.1)
   - G.lite (ITU G.992.2)
   - G.hs (ITU G.994.1)
   - ADSL over ISDN / U-R2
• Compliant with ADSL2 Standard
   - G.dmt.bis (ITU G.992.3)
   - ADSL2 Annex M (ITU G.992.3 Annex M) (BiPAC 7800(N)A only)
• Compliant with ADSL2+ Standard
   - G.dmt.bis plus (ITU G.992.5)
   - ADSL2+ Annex M (ITU G.992.5 Annex M) (BiPAC 7800(N)A only)

If its just a spare one that you have, and its not new, then you could purchase a separate VDSL modem, and use the Billion as jus a wireless router.

You cannot use the HH6 as a modem.

Thank you Keith - that would explain it! Do you have any suggestions for a good VDSL router?

There are quite a few, prices start at £40.

Here are two very popular ones.

The TP-Link TD-W9970 £40

TP-Link AC1200  £67

They both work with BT services, including BT YouView.

Many thanks again Keith - I'll take a look at these and then will hopefully have better luck than with the HH. Cheers

The W9970 is very reliable, and seems to connect to any device including multiple smart devices.

Thanks - multiple devices is an important point - 3 phones, 3 ipads, 3 PC, TV, Xbox; price is too, but stability is really important and so is range within an old stone cottge with thick walls - I guess I could use the BIPAC as an AP to help with the latter?

I use the Bipak 8800NL R2 on Infinity, works well and is relatively cheap.

Wireless range is always going to be a problem as  5GHz will not go far, and even 2.4GHz will not penetrate stone walls, even with a good router with multiple external aerials.

One good option is to stick with a fairly basic router, but add additional wireless hotspots in areas where wifi coverate is poor. That is what my daughter has done in her old house.

These work quite well https://www.shop.bt.com/products/bt-mini-wi-fi-home-hotspot-600-kit-084288-BVFF.html

They also provide two Ethernet ports, and you can add additional hotspots as needed. They also distribute the wireless load more efficiently.
