Broadband dropping, BT Engineers said to log it

Go to solution

Broadband: "FIBRE 100 WITH HALO 1"
Router: Smart Hub 2
Area: E5 (London)
Computers (All having the same problem):
 - Tower PC built 2019 connected to router by ethernet cable
 - Macbook by wifi
 - Tower PC built 2020 connected to router by ethernet cable
 - Asus laptop (Linux) by wifi

Late 2019: Got internet, worked great, 100% uptime
March ??th 2020: Upgraded to current package with MOAR SPEED. Worked great. 100% uptime
January 20th 2021: Internet problems begun. Light on router is always solid blue. BT's 'test' which they use to determine if the broadband works is saying everything is fine, but `ping 8.8.8.8` is giving request timeout for several minutes at a time, e.g. up 15 mins, down for 3. Around 80% uptime overall (20% of the time there is no internet which is cutting video-conference-meetings short and causing work disruption).
January 22nd 2021: Rang BT, after circumnavigating the 9th circle of hell which is BT's demonic telephone system which repeatedly asks for you for the same information before declaring there is no problem, call center friend hung up
January 23rd 2021: Rang BT, engineer made router use 'smart channels' so it would scan for the quietest channel. Claimed the exchange had become busy, this might fix it
January 24th 2021: Rang BT, engineer instructed factory reset of router, and signal to noise ratio reset something something which takes 12-24 hours, said to ring monday afternoon if still having problems
January 25th 2021: Rang BT, engineer said they would send someone to exchange box thing and change internet connection to 'INTERLEAVE' (which I happily agreed to, ~20% speed loss is fine if it prevents all the dropping), said it will be done by end of week. Also suggested logging the drops, because it could be being caused by 'a neighbour using a microwave' or something, and to see if there were any patterns.

Because of the suggestion of logging the outtages, I made this post. My logger evolved a couple times to make the output clearer:

The logger operates by pinging '8.8.8.8' every 5-10 seconds.

This seems like a BT-end kind of problem, no?

I was also wondering... if there is a spike in demand for internets at certain times of the day, shouldn't that result in my connection going from 140Mbps to e.g. 70Mbps as everyone's internet gets squeezed, rather than taking-it-in-turns to have 0Mbps? It seems like very very bad design if its doing the latter rather than the former, so I don't understand why engineers would talk about times of peak internet usage as if this would be a valid reason for outtages. (Slowdowns, sure. But outtages, no way).

Re: Broadband dropping, BT Engineers said to log it

in order for the forum members to help please can you post the stats from your router (if hub enter 192.168.1.254 in your browser) and if  HH5 then go to troubleshooting then helpdesk and if HH6/SH2 then advanced settings then technical log information .

Have you tried the quiet line test? - dial 17070 option 2 - should hear nothing - best done with a corded phone. if cordless phone you may hear a 'dull hum' which is normal

enter your phone number and post results  remember to delete number   https://www.broadbandchecker.btwholesale.com/#/ADSL

Someone may then be able to offer help/assistance/suggestions to your problem

Ah, thanks. We have a landline but there is no phone plugged into it, only provided ADSL filter then RJ11 cable to router.

Re: Broadband dropping, BT Engineers said to log it

From your stats you are on G.FAST which was not clear initially

as far as wireless I would use a wifi analyser on your mobile which will show your network but also the networks round about you and also the channels in use.  I would then select the least congested channel or a channel where your network signal is strongest. I would not use auto select

Re: Broadband dropping, BT Engineers said to log it

Please do not refer to customer support as engineers, they are far from it.

Changing wireless channels will have no effect at the exchange, the exchange doesn't know or care what wireless channel you use.

Customer support cannot perform a SNR reset.

No-one can go to the "exchange box thing" and change your connection to interleave. That is performed by DLM an Openreach automated process.

99% of dropped connections are caused by noise on the line. The only way you can test for it is with a phone handset preferably corded. You can pick up a cheap one for less that £10.

Re: Broadband dropping, BT Engineers said to log it

The customer support said they were doing a SNR reset, and the next one I spoke to said it was odd that they did because they should not have done that, so two customer support people indicate that they can perform a SNR reset, unless they were both lying.

I plugged in wireless BT handset, rang 17070, pressed 2 for quiet line test, muted myself and listened, and can just barely hear the faintest sound which sounds like the distant rolling of car tyres on a motorway. I'm not sure what noise or volume I'm supposed to be expecting so either this test is pointless or if there is a problem there would be obvious noise. The volume of the automated talking person was fine.

If the only way to test the line is with a handset and listening, then what does BT do for deaf people?

Re: Broadband dropping, BT Engineers said to log it

Go to solution

the CS SNR reset is just remotely restarting your hub and not an actual reset which as @pippincp  is done by openreach

any noise on your landline is a problem for your broadband so check again and if still there report phone fault to 151

Re: Broadband dropping, BT Engineers said to log it

Go to solution

Talked to another customer support person, after 10 days of many-blackouts-per-hour slashing zoom calls short and difficulty working from home, we have finally been granted "Broadband backup" (which gives us more data so we can tether through phone and get internet that way). I would have thought we'd be given this much earlier...
¯\(°_o)/¯

In response to the phone line test, the customer support person said there was no problem with noise. The phone line is solid. They noted that they could find no problem at all with the line or connection. The internet happened to be down at that point, and they said they could not access our router on their system. Then I said its back up, and then they could see that they could access it. We confirmed that:
 1. The internet is not working properly
 2. They did not know why and were unable to detect the problem with their testing tools
(ಥ﹏ಥ)

They have reported it to "investigations team", which is odd as I thought BT would have done this when I initially reported it, along with providing "broadband backup" at that time. They said they suspected the investigations team would find nothing and close the issue without doing anything.
ლ(ಠ益ಠლ)

They sent a new router in case the router is at fault... though it is odd that the router would be fine between ~0800 and ~1200 every weekday and going up and down like a yoyo the other hours, it definitely looks like a "BT end" problem, rather than an "our end" problem. But I will also replace the RJ11 cable and ADSL filter as well as the router, then, surely, the near bottomless pit of "it must be something on the customer's end" excuses will be depleted, and a BT engineer's bottom will magnificently levitate off their seat, and they'll exlaim "Oh, looks like some clumsy person bashed this or that whilst working in this exchange box, easy fix, there done" and the internet will work again!

Re: Broadband dropping, BT Engineers said to log it

Replaced RJ11 cable and ADSL filter, no change from that.

BT engineer came and replaced socket. "Why, this socket is over 25 years old!" he exclaimed, dusting it with an archaeology brush. "This finding should help the museum to understand how early man communicated. Scientists believe the humans of the past had high-pitched voices, and screeched at each other in a language called 'dialup'". It is unusual for a house to have a socket which is this old.

With the new socket on the wall, there was no longer any need for an ADSL filter as this new one has it built in. The internet works now it seems. Yaaay
