Re: Broadband speed very different depending on test site?

Hi @jaypeegolf

The information contained within your router management pages can really help others diagnose technical issues. To post these stats, open up a web browser and type 192.168.1.254 or BThomehub.home. Navigate to the 'Troubleshooting' Tab and then click on 'Helpdesk', you will then need to enter the admin password which can be found on the sticker on the back of BT Home Hub 4 and 5. BT Home hub 3 will have the sticker on the underside of the router.

When using a Hub 3, you will see an option at the bottom right hand corner to select 'full details'. click on this, copy the info displayed and post the results. If using a BT Home Hub 4 or 5 navigate to 'Troubleshooting' then to 'Logs'. You will then find two lines which will state 'DSL noise margin' and 'DSL line rate', copy this info and include this in your post.

Re: Broadband speed very different depending on test site?

If @jaypeegolf  has a HH3 and Infinity, he must have an Openreach modem and the line stats won't be available unfortunately.

Re: Broadband speed very different depending on test site?

Well spotted @licquorice.  Sorry @jaypeegolf as mentioned the line stats aren't located in the Hub 3 when you're using an Openreach modem.

Re: Broadband speed very different depending on test site?

So I have no way of verifying the speeds BT ‘say’ they are providing, which was the crux of original post!

Re: Broadband speed very different depending on test site?

@jaypeegolf What speed do you get if you run the BT Speed tester? You need to login with your BT ID and it will tell you what you're getting.

Re: Broadband speed very different depending on test site?

57mbs! But as I don’t appear to be able to verify this speed in any way...?

Re: Broadband speed very different depending on test site?

The speed that matters to most people is the speed that their computer or device experience, and advice that one should use an ethernet connection is all very well except that few, if any, smart phones and tablets can be connected other than via wifi. The same is true for NOWTV boxes and Amazon Firesticks although some recent models do have ethernet ports. ISP’s quoting speeds that can be exploited only by direct ethernet connections are little short of cons to persuade gullible consumers that they can experience “blistering download speeds” if they upgrade their broadband package.

Re: Broadband speed very different depending on test site?

There is no ISP who can guarantee speed via a wireless connection.
