I wasn't home. I cancelled daily weeks in advance of the day the engineer coming over. How is this my fault?

It's obvious you're not here to help but troll instead. Fair enough. I hope this thread shows the reality that is BT.

I to have a simular experiance to the OP. I re-newed then phoned up 5min later and cancelled my re-newal the UK call centre said this was done ok cool i thought.
Then it dawned on me i know what BT are like is it really cancelled so i spoke to another operator who said it wasn't, then got told i couldn't cancel anyway they agreed to cancel but i phoned up six times in total one to request the MAC code and then other times to make sure that was requested and that they put cancellation free of charge on my account. The shambles is the operator can tell the customer anything as the customer has nothing in writting.
Where as my new ISP any phone conversation i have they will send a message stating the conversation that we had.
I have sent a complaint to BT via email and I haven't got a reply after 24hrs. But as we all know BT are -constantly- busy. There doesn't ever seem to be a quiet time. Just busy or more busy. If the issue is unresolved or I have not recieved a reply I will go to the Communications Ombudsman Services.
