Hello,
Unfortunately it might take months for me to get permissions from landlord/building management/council to get permissions to install full fibre (listed building, front face requires much red tape to go through in order to change)
It seems only FTTP is available to me (?) but the previous tenant left behind their old router which clearly joined the old cables (I believe phone/copper line as it has ADSL modem adapter)
I have often seen people suggest posting this so I went ahead and got it:
Is it possible for me to ask for broadband using the existing old cables or is my only option full fibre (and the potential months of waiting on permissions)?
If the existing phone line comes from an overhead pole there would be no need for listed buildings consent since it would be replacing one (copper) cable with another (fibre) cable. They would likely be the same colour too! If the existing line comes underground and replaced by another underground cable no problem and no need for listed building consent.
Only time listed building consent might be needed would be replacing an underground cable with an overhead one. Your FTTC speeds look fine. Ask for a VDSL connection!
as you are in a fibre priority area then only broadband choice is FTTP. are you intending to use BT as your new ISP?
a new fibre cable will be run from the existing pole to your home and a CSP will be attached low down to the outside wall so you will probably need permission for that to happen. the fibre cable will then run from CSP through the wall into your home to the ONT (basically fibre modem) to which you need to supply power and a cable runs to your router
There can be ‘exceptions’ to the general rule that once an area has access to FTTP it must be used for new provisions…yours seems to be an exceptional case (the checker even says exception ) , others exceptions may be like when the cost of construction of FTTP to the customers address requires the customer to contribute towards the excess construction costs (ECC) , but they won’t or can’t pay this , so SoGEA (fibre to the cabinet without PSTN telephony ) is basically made available where in more ‘normal’ circumstances where there is no real barrier to taking FTTP , the user would not have a choice, it’s FTTP or nothing …however as with most exceptions, it may need an ‘expert’ BT guide to progress that type of exception order , as the initial computer return may imply that FTTP has to be taken.
