Confusion with BT Hub models

Go to solution

I am in theory being connected to Full Fibre and Digital phone in a couple of weeks but I am getting confused by the different Hub types.

Apologies if this sounds a silly question.

I have been happily using for a number of years what I believe is a Smart Hub 5, on the back it says HomeHub5 Type A and the Wireless SSD starts with BTHub5.

I was sent a newer Hub a few years ago so decided to install this in preparation, this has BT Smart Hub Type A (No number) on the the back and a Wireless SSD starting with BTHub6.

I have now seen online people quoting red connections on back of hubs to connect to (I have four yellow) and referring to Hubs as Smart Hub 2 (Version 1).

So do I have a Smart Hub 6 or a Smart Hub 1 (Version 6) and is it compatible with Full Fibre as BT have not mentioned new equipment?

You need the Smart Hub 2 for BT Digital Voice, as its the only one compatible, and has a phone socket on the back.

You currently have a Smart Hub, aka hub6.

The Smart Hub2 has 4 yellow sockets but port 4 is configurable between a LAN port and WAN port.

Shouldn't BT be supplying this?

EDIT Managed to access my BT Account, seems they are sending me a SmartHub2 which will arrive two days before the engineer 😉

A second question, if I don't need the phone line can I use the old Hub still?

Yes, when you move to DV you will be supplied with a SH2.

Different hubs shown here https://www.bt.com/help/broadband/learn-about-broadband/different-types-of-bt-hub

If you are being migrated to Digital Voice by BT and are on FTTC , or have ordered FTTP ( with or without DV ) and don’t currently have a router with a WAN port , then a SH2 will be supplied.

Why  ‘in theory’ should you be connected to FTTP , you have either an order to do this or you don’t , if you have an order for DV or conversion to FTTP with DV , then nearer the actual date this is intended to take place a appropriate router is sent ….this may be a day or two before , not many weeks before , and obviously only if it’s ordered

I never requested the change, BT just randomly informed me they were upgrading me free of charge.

Not quite sure how they will do it as my mother who I care for is also at this house and two lines run into the current socket, she has no Internet so has to remain on the old copper line.

Re: Confusion with BT Hub models

If you have two BT lines , one with no broadband, the BT phone only line won’t be touched , the one with broadband will be replaced with FTTP , this ‘contacted by BT out of the blue ‘ seems to be quite a new thing , previously unless you ordered a new BT service or were recontracting with BT , FTTP , even if it available wasn’t ‘forced’ upon people unless they contacted BT , it’s still not forced if BT contact you  ( you can say ‘no thanks’ ) but it’s now a proactive  approach by BT , whereas previously the customer had to take the initiative, now BT seem to also be taking the initiative, with the proviso that it’s not compulsory to take their offer in these situations.

Ideally the "Internet" line would go direct to the first floor where the router is leaving the normal line alone on the ground floor but not sure it is viable.
