Download Speed Drop and Upload Speed Halved since firmware update on 16/01/15

I noticed that my speeds have been dropping from their normal of 62/15 to as low as 49/8 over the last week or so. I then looked in the event log and noticed a firmware update on the 16th Jan and since then on the WAN details PPOE kept going down and up every 16 hours or so taking my speeds down with it. I also noticed that the Line attenuation and Signal attenuation on the upload side had increased to 28.1 / 19.7 and 28.0 / 19.5, whereas before all the figures were around the 19 figure. I rebooted the hub last night as I thought things could not get any worse but they did. So I shut everything down overnight and rebooted the hub this morning folllowed by my server and then my PC. The download speeds had increased very slightly but the upload speeds still stayed around 8 instead of their normal 15-16.

I have had trouble ever since this was installed late last year and eventually an engineer came out and fixed several faults outside and one on my incoming connection as well as fitting the latest wall plate and things have been fine since then, that is until a few days ago.

Re: Download Speed Drop and Upload Speed Halved since firmware update on 16/01/15

Looks like your upload will struggle to get more than 10 never mind 15.

I think you have noise affecting your line, this could be caused by a fault.

Can you post what the DSL checker estimates for your line please? www.dslchecker.bt.com

Re: Download Speed Drop and Upload Speed Halved since firmware update on 16/01/15

I have corrected that.

I have had upload speeds of 16+ for a couple of months with no problems, but it seems funny that all this co-incided with a firmware update.

Here a few Speedtest.net results:

Re: Download Speed Drop and Upload Speed Halved since firmware update on 16/01/15

True, however it's the noise margin where the problem lies I think. The target is 6 but they are currently below that meaning you have no headroom for an increase in data rate - as the Maximum data rate suggests.

Re: Download Speed Drop and Upload Speed Halved since firmware update on 16/01/15

I could be totally wrong here as I don't use a HH, but from what I can gather from the forum, before the firmware update the HH5 didn't provide attenuation and SNR figures for upload. If the HH5 was unable to provide those figures how would the DSLAM be able to adjust the speed to give a 6dB margin? Presumably it didn't and thus upload speeds could have been higher before the firmware change.

Re: Download Speed Drop and Upload Speed Halved since firmware update on 16/01/15

I agree regarding the noise margin but nothing has changed here at all, unless other faults have occured outside yet again. So what do I do now, I expect I have to talk to the script jockey's in India again but last time they achieved absolutely nothing apart from eventually sending out an engineer who fixed the problem. But that took dozens of phone calls and email complaints to achieve that.
