We have BT 'Superfast Fibre 1 Unlimited' and I have recently had some queries over speed. I had a first line engineer out (who fitted a new panel on the main socket which improved things), but I'm still rather confused.
We are using the standard BT Smart Hub and the downstream sync speed is showing as 32.2 Mbps. First question. How does this relate to the actual speed you should expect on a client connected directly to the router via Ethernet?
When I run the BT Wholesale speed test with Wireless turned off on the router and only the PC I'm typing on connected I get between 25Mbps and 27Mpbs. I'm trying at different times and when I run it now I'm only getting 25.93Mbps.
My minimum speed promise is 27Mbps and I keep on being told because the router is showing 32.2Mbps that things are fine.
After the engineer visited I did get a call from a nice chap who offered to send me a free Smart Hub 2, which I have done some initial testing on and the speed does not improve.
Your download speed will never be as high as your sync speed due to protocol overheads. However, it should be very slightly higher than it is which is possibly due to errors on the line. Is there any noise when you carry out a quiet line test on 17070 from the test socket behind the removable faceplate of the master socket.
