Hello,
Does anyone know if it is necessary to use a VDSL modem/router to connect to a BT Fibre to the cabinet (FTTC) connection? I am currently using a BT Smart Hub but the options are limited. I have an ADSL modem/router that I have used before when I was on copper only. This doesn't seem to work now.
Regards,
Rob
Yes, FTTC is VDSL, ADSL modem/routers won't work..
Here are a couple of suggestions for VDSL mode/routers.
TP-Link AC1200 Wireless Dual Band VDSL/ADSL about £67

If you only want single band wireless, then this one.
The TP-Link TD-W9970 for about £40 or less.

They both work will all BT services, including BT YouView.
VDSL is FTTC.
VDSL is a term made up by Openreach, it stands for Veryfast Digital Subscriber Line.
No other Network Provider or ISP uses the abbreviation because really there’s no such thing.

Not quite https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VDSL
Wikipedia is a resource anyone can edit so can’t be a reliable source of information.
For all we know Openreach themselves wrote that.
I am sure you are just joking.
So, semantics aside, I assume that my ADSL modem/router will not work. But I guess that there is nothing stopping me from using the Smart Hub for the modem side of things and using the Netgear router as a WAP, right?
Its not semantics at all, ADSL and VDSL are totally different technologies.
The hub cannot be used as a pure modem but if you leave it as it is and turn off DHCP on the Netgear and give it an address outside of the DHCP range of the hub, then yes, you can use the Netgear as a WAP by connecting it LAN port to LAN port with the hub.
Okay, yes, I understand the difference in the technologies. I was just referring to the discussion about whether VDSL exists or not!
Anyway, I appreciate your help. I will give that a go.
My main reason for doing this is to have Guest access and there doesn’t seem to be that option with the Smart Hub.
