FTTC speed at specific times

Go to solution

Evening everyone,

14 days ago had the openreach engineer around to wire everything up and get infinity going, nice speed of ~49mbps down and ~9mbps up.

The only problem, every evening, around 20:30 lasting until around 23:30, the speed suddenly drops to 8-9mbps down, upload can vary anywhere from 1mbps to 7mbps. Latency also goes into the 70-90 area from the local speedtest servers (typically around 12 in normal conditions).

I'm currently attributing this to the SNR margin on the line, from my past posts (not sure if visible) when this line was on ADSL2 the default 6db downstream target would cause the line to be unstable and the mods corrected the problems by setting the target to 9db.

Currently I see the speed drops whenever the margin drops below 7.

Anyone have any suggestions before I raise this to the mods again?

I should add, most people wouldn't complain about 8-9mbps throughput as most services will still work. Services that would normally work (twitch, youtube etc) are just stuck buffering most of the time with the current problems.

The nightly problems are beginning again 😞

It does seem to cope better in the rain with a lower margin as with the stats tonight.

Re: FTTC speed at specific times

Hi all,

Update on this, unfortunately while wholesale can change settings on ADSL products such as margin, it appears only openreach engineers can do the same for VDSL.

An openreach engineer did visit the property to investigate, and the jist of the visit I've been informed (was at work at the time) was basically that he thinks it's congestion on the network, it's a UK wide problem and the higher ups are ignoring it hoping people won't complain. Sigh.

The one night the margin didn't drop too low (yesterday) we were getting around 30mbps down, it was still dropping lower then I would like and close to the range causing problems.

Unfortunately, that seems to have just been a blip and tonight, at 5db margin, the results are currently:

Download speedachieved during the test was - 6.01 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speedsis 36.02 Mbps-45.03 Mbps .
Additional Information:
IP Profile for your line is - 45.03 Mbps

Re: FTTC speed at specific times

I too have been seeing this on my exchange (ULGHAM Cabinet 1) for about the last 2-3 weeks and

having ruled out all my equipment came to the conclusion it was either exchange backhaul

contention or central BT trunk contention.

I don't see any significant SNRM drop at the times when the slow down occurs and when I

test early the next morning everything is back to normal until 18:00-19:00 then it happens again.

Would have called and reported the issue but I just can't be bothered going through all the pointless

testing etc at my end and then possibly still not getting a definitive reponse/cause.

It is interesting however that someone else has also noticed this issue.

It would be far better if BT know there is an issue to say so and provide a timescale for a fix,

coming clean on an issue gets more points in my book than hiding one and hoping no one notices.

What's the uptime reported by your homehub?

Re: FTTC speed at specific times

If the question was aimed at me then I have not been using the HH 5 for months as it

keeps resetting and causing DLM issues.

At present I have a Billion 8800NL in pass through modem mode with an ASUS RT-N66U router.

Previous to last night my uptime had been over 7 days without any issues but as part of ruling

out my modem/router connection as the issue I restarted them last night but this had no effect

on the throughput issue.
