Just an update for anyone following this or finding it and being in the same situation.

 

the engineer came out and said that they’re generally still being a bit cautious about doing more work than they need to in a house but it’s up to their discretion. He was happy to lay new fibre up the stairs, coming in from the downstairs toilet as that was the easiest wall to come in from.  

He just stripped the black outer shielding to leave the thinner white fibre cable and its barely noticeable along the skirting board.  The ONT is now in my study with the hub attached.
