Fibre 2 lower line attenuation in cold weather

Go to solution

Hello.

I generally get pretty good download speeds on my fibre 2 connection (I'm probably about 1km away from the cabinet).  But I notice that the line attenuation gets better in cold weather so that the data rate and download and upload speeds get better.  For example, in the summer, the attenuation was around 39.5 and my data rate values were around 10 up and 65 down (around 9 and 55 actual speeds).   Now, in colder weather, my attenuation is around 38 or less and the data rate values are around 12 and 72 (10+ and 62 actual speeds).    Is this normal and to be expected?

Thanks.

Wilf

That's good to know, thanks.  Thought there might be some sort of line instability.

All totally expected and is a natural occurence. Copper becomes more conductive as the temperature drops.

You can wade through this if you want to know more.

Ah, of course.  I hadn't thought about that and it's many years since A (or O) level physics!
