Huge connection drop-outs when gaming

Good Morning,

Over the last 3/4 months I have been experiencing huge connection drop outs. I have my PlayStation 4 connected to BT Home Hub 5 through a wired Ethernet connection and very often experience huge latency spikes in-game. This is even more amplified when another person in the household is streaming Netflix or Prime.

On a regular day I get 20up/1.5 down but when I have a spike this can drop down to 6up/0.5down. In-game latency can go from 32ms right up to over 999ms.

I have tested the phone line with a wired telephone and there is no feedback whatsoever.

I have just been off the phone  with BT and they say the line is 'unstable' and they will need to send out an engineer and charge the subsequent £85 fee if the issue is on my end.  I am wondering if there are any other solutions I can try before getting an engineer out?

Would purchasing a new router like the TP-Link AC1200 help with managing traffic and drop outs?

Any other help you guys can provide will be greatly appreciated!
