Increase in cost because of a port?

Just moved house & signed up for BT internet. Charged £19.99 a month for broadband & after fitting, speed was 0.08! It could not be used. When we complained, we were told we needed a port & there was one now available but we would have to pay £40 a month & £75 for connection. Surely this is wrong?  Any advice please?

Re: Increase in cost because of a port?

I suspect you are misinterpreting what has been offered, it's more likely that you are currently  on 'ordinary' ADSL broadband , and presumably the distance from the exchange to your property is such that it can only deliver a very slow speed, and that they have offered an upgrade to FTTC ( VDSL) , this will more than likely provide a much better speed ( in fact upto 80Mb depending on the distance to the FTTC cabinet from your property) so it's not a port change as that implies no change of 'system' just moving from one port to another on the same system, when in fact it's probably an ADSL to VDSL upgrade you have been offered , hence the increase in price.....if you can only get slow speed from ADSL they are under no obligation to offer the more expensive VDSL at ADSL prices
