Internet goes away frequently

Go to solution

I have had a problem with my FTTC Superfast Fibre 1 Unlimited for quite a few weeks/months , in that the actual internet connection goes away quite frequently every day. The Openreach modem is a Huawei HG612 and when it happens the DSL link light goes off. I have a script running on a Raspberry Pi on my home network that checks every 5 minutes to see if the public IP address changes , it emails me that new IP address. I have had fibre boradband for a few years now and it has been very nearly 50Mbps and rock solid and very infrequently changed IP address .  Not now though as something has gone wrong over these last few weeks/months. It seems the the connection is being lost between the modem and the cabinet and when I reboot the modem it comes back usually with another IP address. I have tried another BT Openreach modem I have as a spare and it is the same result. If I go through the BT tests it says nothing is wrong but I don't agree , there is something wrong. Back when I had ADSL we had an issue with the telephone wire that goes through a neigbours garden and it goes between a fork in a branch of a tree and the wires insulation was rubbed away caused a similar issue. I don't mind betting that the tree has grown and is unleashing more wire rubbing. Here are a couple of graphs of data that I save just to keep an eye on upload and download speeds and you can see something has changed , ignore the scaling but 500k is 50Mbps. One is the monthly and the other is yearly , clearly something happened at the end of May this year. I haven't had a nice clear level graph since as you can see , I'm glad I log this stuff.

Best Wishes

Re: Internet goes away frequently

If the problem is as you suggest do you have any line noise?  Check dual 17070 option 2 should be silent and best with corded phone from test socket

Tried the quiet line test as suggested but it seemed pretty quiet on a corded phone. There was crackling when I first dialed 17070 option 2 and it connected but it has been quiet ever since , I've tried it a few times over the last 5 or 10 minutes but it's quiet.

Re: Internet goes away frequently

If you have no line noise then very unlikely to be the tree rubbing the cable bare so need to look elsewhere

is your modem unlocked and you can post connection stats?

Re: Internet goes away frequently

Well things went from bad to worse, no broadband at all. Then no dialing tone, the line circuit was completely dead. I logged the no dial tone as a separate fault yesterday morning with BT on the 10th of July. The webpage response was it will be fixed by 6pm on the 15th July. However an Engineer came out the same day around 4pm to my house to check from the master socket , I had spotted him out at the phone cabinet in the street earlier. The fault was something outside the house and now phone line is working , broadband back to its cheery self. Just thought I would complete the story for this fault.
