Is This Another Scam?

Go to solution

As per the subject, I assume this is a scam. Text message received today at 17:42.

I certainly don't see anything like the link posted if I log on to the BT website and check my offers on there and if it's personalised as it claims to be then why is it not https://.

N.B.  I've deliberately corrupted the link to ensure it doesn't work just in case it is a scam

"Hi from BT,

We’re leading the way with Full Fibre to give you a noticeably faster connection. We’re talking game-changing broadband you can count on.

See your exclusive offer here http://go.bt.com/personalised_upgrade/h8h1

Annual price changes and terms apply. Text STOP to 61998 to opt out of all text message marketing."

It links to BT.com, so unless there are other links to other sites, I'd say it's legit.

Hi - I received one of these text messages today but the link doesn’t bring up any offers, although it does route to a secure BT site. Enquiring via the MyBT site about personalised offers gives a response that none are available but please phone if you want.
Why is BT sending the texts?

I'd be very suspicious of the link. http://go.bt.com appears NOT to go to any BT website. It appears to go to an insecure website assets.imicampaign.io. I would not touch it.

Re: Is This Another Scam?

I have just now received an email offering the same ‘upgrade’, essentially the same wording as the previous text message, and quoting my correct BT id and the last characters of my BT account number. There is still no ‘offer’ on the ‘My BT’ site.
It does seem a scam, but with quite a bit of correct info about me.

Can BT advise on the authenticity of such a text/email promotion?

@ICB  @ChrisB

go.bt.com is a genuine BT domain and they use imicampaign.io for customer communications hence why the the go.bt.com redirect to a imicampaign.io url.

The 'go' part is a subdomain of bt.com, so the link is genuine.
The assets.imicampaign.io will be used to track how successful the campaign was by tracking clicks and orders, all normal stuff when seeing how well a promotion was.

It just appears the marketing team have sent the wrong mailer too early or the wrong url, it's an internal mixup rather than a scam though.

So why do BT use insecure websites?
