Is this a proper Faceplate install?

Been trying to get to the bottom of my connection issues ( custom support no use) For a while now.

Basically I had Virgin Media ( 20mb cable package) before and could always game online fine even though the overall download speed was poor (~17mb).

Now My IP Profile on BT Unlimited Infinity 2 is much better (60mb down, 15 up) However gaming is awful. On both PC and games consoles the pings are so high it makes gaming impossible. When i do speedtest , ping test etc always 40ms+ to uk servers. 150+ to USA game servers

I just wanted to check my setup at home was right before I cancel my contract (Reason I got it was for gaming.)

Anyway when the BT Engineer installed he said a couple of strange things that got me thinking hed changed the wiring or done somthing strange.

1) He said that Virgin had installed their own line from house to (Street ? ) and he would have to use the old BT cable and faceplate . After Installation there is still a Virgin Faceplae and line coming into my house.

2) He said our blocks 'box' was a mess and he had to do some extra work there.

Anyway I am now left with a setup that I just feel doesnt look right. For a start There is an extension faceplate that plugs into a 'test' socket on the original box. Nothing else. I opened the box up to the original cable coming in and the red wire ( ringwire ) was disconnected. Anyway the setup is as follows:

test-1.png

1) Thin black cable comes through wall and 2 strands connected. All output goes to the 'test' socket on the bottom right.

test-2.png

2) This extension at the front faceplate acts as an adapter and puts both phone line and cable wire into the 'test' socket of the faceplate attached to the wall

depth.png

3) Image showing the depth of the extension faceplate

Just interested in knowing if this is a common install and is disconnecting the ringwire common as well. Would any of this setup be affectinging my pings/latency in any way?

Could the virgin Line been of better quality ?( it was installed 5 years ago as opposed to bt one which been there since 1980s landlord said)

Re: Is this a proper Faceplate install?

That looks correct. The engineer could not use the Virgin line as it goes to the Virgin cabinet via a different route besides it being illegal.

Post the results of a tracert to bbc.co.uk and also the gaaming servers you are using and we may be able to see where the problem lies.

Re: Is this a proper Faceplate install?

This was taken just now on EA one ( I have xbox one + 360 + PC)

ping 2.png

Often in those last 4 rows I see figuers of 150, 170, 180, 190 200+ etc etc. This would happen more 4pm -10pm

When I had Virgin I was consistently getting 80-100ms on all my games ping. Never had an issue with them for years.

Now I double my cost of monthly package yet My gaming connection has lost 30 ms ping on average.

And please dont blame EA as I play ( or try to) Battlefield, Guild Warks, Starcraft 2 etc etc and is same on all of them.

Re: Is this a proper Faceplate install?

How about some one from BT puts pressure on Level 3 to improve their service. I find it incredible every gamer on these forums comp0laining about same thing. Why do BT go to all effort of organising superfast fibreoptic  if they cant even organise good 3rd party peering companies to the USA to route all their data once it leasevs the UK

Utterly mindblowing how they can have one of the best networks in the UK and then horrendous service once they pass it over to Level 3.

When I contact level 3 they said it is EAs faults ( servers and configuration)

When I contact BT they say it is out of their hands once service leaves UK

When I contact EA they say it is Level 3s fault I recieve such high latency.

Frankly fed up of awful Service.

Does anyone have any reviews of Plusnet pro for gaming? I hear they prioritise gaming traffic?

Re: Is this a proper Faceplate install?

Hi Glenuig

I use plusnet unlimited fibre. I can not comment on the pro version as I do not use it and to be fair I have noticed no difference for gaming between bt or plusnet.

Any way I did a tracert for you. Hope the information is useful for you.

Re: Is this a proper Faceplate install?

Thanks Nigel. That is exatcly the pings I hope to get. Those are similar Pings I had with my Virgin Cable 20MB package

When I moved to BT Infinity 'superfast Broadband' I gained 30-50 ms on every games I play and random spikes up to 250ms a lot of time

Re: Is this a proper Faceplate install?

I just did a trace my self the problem is level3 BT and/or EA need to have there network engineers report the issue or changine the routing via somewhere else sadly BTs phone support such a thing is beyond them your best bet is a moderator spots this i think and escalates it to the correct people.

Side note with my last ISP issues with level 3 was comman and they would fix the routing with in 48 hours when possible. Maybe if you can get an email for bt uk tech support and try send them your tracert and winmtr data too they might look into it.

added winmtr data

Re: Is this a proper Faceplate install?

Just in case it helps, another test from BT Infinity.

Not sure why they route from Winchester via Sheffield to London (all traffic goes that way), and then via Paris to Washington, but a very stead 100ms value, with pings consistently 100ms+=5ms.

Re: Is this a proper Faceplate install?

Have to say the routing is not the best ive seen it done alot better. But my main worry would be the 12th node looks like maybe bit of their kit is dying. Best we can do is post data and hope the mods can get it pushed to be fixed asap
