Re: My neighbour's FTTC speed is 3 times faster and they're further away!

Go to solution

Sorry but I don't think it is anything to do with aluminium cable for you and not your neighbour. The dslchecker results are based on the distance according to openreach database and the average speed of other people's connection round about you. Problems occur when the checker speed is better than that achievable from the customers connection. Only then do you find the cause is aluminium cabling. This is not the scenario in your case. Your speed is as expected from stats and checker

I expect your neighbour is connected to a different nearer cab than you hence his better speed.  Dslchecker stats using neighbour phone number will clarify the discrepancy

All I know is what I've seen.

I've seen his HH stats. I've seen the website confirming his speed. I've seen him download a Netflix program in seconds.

I can see the cable that runs into his house and I can follow it all the way to the cabinet and it's nearly 1.5km away (I'm 1.2km and he's further down the road). The adslchecker also confirms that he's connected to the same cabinet and it's 1km in a straight line. The laws of maths say that the shortest path is a straight line and so it can't be 300/400m it has to be at least 1km and it's nearer 1.5km if you actually follow the cable.

He has an HH6 just like me and it's not a fibre cable.

Thanks for your input and for your time, but there's no need to reply further. I have my answer. Of course if anyone else has any useful thoughts or ideas, I'd be glad to hear them. No need for anyone else to query my original post.

Thanks, but I've already confirmed that it's cabinet 20, same as mine and that is the nearest cabinet anyway.

No need to reply further. I appreciate your time, but I'm not finding your comments as helpful as others and I'm sure you have better things to do with your time!

Hi.

As a matter of interest, are you both on the actual same package? There are a few flavours of infinity

Thanks Andy.

I'm on Infinity 1, because the fastest speed my line will support is below the top speed for that package. I was originally on infinity 2, but they put be back down and gave me a refund when we realised that the line wasn't good enough to get the faster speeds.

My neighbour is on infinity 2 (though his line isn't supposed to be able to support those speeds!) but it's why he's able to get nearly 60Mbps. If he moved to Infinity 1, it would bring his speed down as it would be capped to the Infinity 1 limit.

It's a good suggestion, but it's not the solution here as the choice of package wouldn't affect e.g., the adslchecker values and my connection isn't being capped by the infinity 1 package.

Thanks for your input!

Hi if they go to  https://www.dslchecker.bt.com/adsl/adslchecker.welcome and enter their phone number it will display a lot of information including the Roadside cabinet number. Compare the them both and that will give the answer your looking for.

Thanks Chris,

We’ve done this and confirmed the information in my original post as well as the fact that we’re on the same cabinet.

They clearly get much higher speeds than us and the accepted solution above suggests that it’s because of cabling problems. Their line is fairly new, but ours has been repaired quite a few times due to tree damage so probably has lots of joins.

Thanks for responding.

Sorry but until you have run dslchecker using both you and neighbour's phone number you have not confirmed both on same cabinet

It's possible that 2 people fed from same pole can be on different cabinets

Yes, we did that this morning. Same cabinet as I've told you several times already! This is the nearest cabinet so if our neighbour was on a different cabinet their speed should be slower!

I'm grateful to everyone who has given up their time to respond, but please don't post if you haven't read the earlier posts or are just asking questions that have already been answered.

Unless your neighbour has overcome the laws of physics, he is not getting 60M at 1.2Km. He is either much closer to the cabinet than you think (possibly a different cabinet that you are unaware of)) or the speedchecker he used is incorrect.
