No connection with my Asus RT-N66U router to Infinity :-(

Hi experts,

The BT engineer came round to set up my new BT Infinity broadband earlier today. I was unhappy to find I was only hitting 16mb download speeds compared to the advertised maximum of 76mb.

Previously I was using TalkTalk using a T-Link 8177 modem and Asus N66U router. So after the engineer left I thought I'd ditch the HH5, and use my own equipment.

However, I simply cannot get it to connect to the internet.

I've trawled the forums and am confident that the modem and router are both compatible with BT Infinity. I've accessed the Asus router settings and set up a PPPoE connection with username 'bthomehub@btbroadband.com' and password 'BT' but no luck. I've even tried the 'Quick Internet Setup' but keep getting a 'Detecting the internet timed out' message.

Plug in the HH5 and it works fine.

What am I doing wrong?

Thank guys.

Are you sure your modem is a VDSL modem and not an ADSL one.

No idea. It's possible it's ADSL only.

I've read some forum posts of people using it with Infinity without any issues.

Looks like it's an ADSL modem so will not work on VDSL, which is what Infinity uses. Your Asus router will work ok with Infinity if you get a VDSL modem or you could try turning off the wireless on the HH5 and using it as your modem with the Asus as your router. I'm sure somebody on the forum will be able to help you set that up.

Re: No connection with my Asus RT-N66U router to Infinity :-(

As you say the modem is ADSL only.

I can confirm that the Asus itself works very well on Infinity.

If you don't want to use the HH5 - and why would you - then I'd suggest getting a new Openreach vDSL modem from ebay , should cost no more than about £20. It shouldn't matter which brand so ECI or Huawei/EchoLife should work equally well.

There are those that suggest matching the modem to the equipment in the cabinet but I noticed no difference when I tried both at the start of my contract (with the assistance/co-operation of an OR broadband specialist). It's not like on ADSL where matching the chipset could make a noticeable difference.

Ah, I see. Thanks for your input. Much appreciated.

I'll just wait to see if anybody else can confirm my modem is the issue.

Re: No connection with my Asus RT-N66U router to Infinity :-(

To confirm what. The T-Link modem won't work with Infinity.

If you are meaning the problem with your speeds what was your estimated speed at time of ordering. Did you run the estimated speed test.

Can you run this checker and post back a screen shot of the results

http://www.dslchecker.bt.com/adsl/adslchecker.welcome

and use this speed tester then carry out the further diagnostics and post back a screen shot of all the results including your IP profile for up and down.

Re: No connection with my Asus RT-N66U router to Infinity :-(

I have just installed the Asus N66U Modem /Router today after problems with hh5 speed problems and works just fine improved speed over hh5, log in using both your user name and password that you woul use for logging into your BT account.

Re: No connection with my Asus RT-N66U router to Infinity :-(

I presume you have the Asus DSL-N66U which has an integrated VDSL modem where as the OP's Asus RT-N66U is only a router with no modem.

Yes but the setup should be similar.
