Noisy line and terrible upload speed

I recently noticed that my connection speed had dropped from around 45Mbps down and 6Mbps up to around 39Mbps down and 0.4Mbps up and I also have hissing and crackling on my phone line. I had serious problems with my line last year that resulted in me having a new cable installed between the pavement junction box and my master socket, a new SSFP master socket and new internal wiring between the master socket and my HH5.

The last engineer that visited me explained that most of the wiring between my pavement junction box and the closest cabinet was aluminium. Also my neighbour has had multiple issues with water getting in his pavement junction box over the last year. So seen as all my wiring is new I guess theres now another fault further back up the wire.

I've got an engineer visit booked on Wed, so hopefully they'll track down the fault. Between now and then I'd like to get an idea of what the stats on my HH5 show about the fault. So I'd be grateful if someone could decipher them as I can't remember what it all means. This is what I'm seeing:

3. Firmware version:Software version 4.7.5.1.83.8.204.1.11 (Type A) Last updated 04/07/15
4. Board version:BT Hub 5A
5. DSL uptime:0 days, 02:09:15
6. Data rate:507 / 45447
7. Maximum data rate:543 / 43504
8. Noise margin:7.0 / 5.5
9. Line attenuation:17.8 / 22.6
10. Signal attenuation:16.8 / 21.1

Thanks.

Re: Noisy line and terrible upload speed

apart from your connection time only 2+hrs and your up speed at 0.5mb you still have a 45mb connection speed.  with that speed I would have sugegsted that you should be on infinity 1 with max 40mb as the extra cost does not seem to justify the extra 5mb conenction speed

Re: Noisy line and terrible upload speed

Thanks. I'd recently reset my router at the request of BT tech support.

When my connection was first enabled I was getting around 50Mbps and I had that for a couple of months before the cable between the pavement and my house degraded to the extent that my phone stopped working. After that was repaired I ended up with around 47Mbps which has gradually dropped a little over the last year. So for the most part I've had a reasonable speed for the money until more recently.

I've just run another speed test and now my download has dropped to 30Mbps and my upload hasn't improved. So it appears that the problem is getting worse.

Here's the results of the availability checker:

FTTC Range A (Clean)55.135148.3--Available
FTTC Range B (Impacted)46.827.413.86.1--

As you can see, my line should support around 55Mbps.

The last engineer that visited told me that if I had copper all the way to the cabinet I'd be getting around 60 to 70Mbps as its only a few hundred meters down the road. 70 would be great but I'd settle for the 50 I was originally getting.

Cheers.

Re: Noisy line and terrible upload speed

The estimate for your line is between 55/35mb but that does not mean your line can support 55mb just your speed is in that range. It could just as easily be at the middle

if you have a HH5 can you go to hub manager then trobleshooting then helpdesk and post 1-12

can you run btspeedtester and when first test completes then run diagnostic test and post results  must be done with wired connection  btspeedtester

try quiet line test   dial 17070 option 2  should be quiet and best with corded phone

Re: Noisy line and terrible upload speed

Here's my HH5 stats tonight:

1. Product name:BT Home Hub
2. Serial number:
3. Firmware version:Software version 4.7.5.1.83.8.204.1.11 (Type A) Last updated 04/07/15
4. Board version:BT Hub 5A
5. DSL uptime:0 days, 16:31:26
6. Data rate:507 / 40297
7. Maximum data rate:467 / 41671
8. Noise margin:4.6 / 4.4
9. Line attenuation:2.8 / 22.6
10. Signal attenuation:2.6 / 21.6
11. Data sent/received:150.9 MB / 2.0 GB
12. Broadband username:bthomehub@btbroadband.com

I haven't reset my router in the last 24 hours, so it must have reset it's self at some point.

Here's the speed test results:

02-11-15 00.25.png

For comparison, this is speed test I saved last year before the cable to my house broke:

BT diag before cable broke.png

I was consistently getting those figures give or take half a meg or so.

I ran the quiet line test and there was a constant hiss with intermittent fizzles and crackles. It's similar to the noise I was getting last year when my cable broke down but not quite as bad.

Re: Noisy line and terrible upload speed

then you need to report a phone fault to 151 with no mention of broadband   get line fixed and broadband should improve

Re: Noisy line and terrible upload speed

I'd already reported the fault as I mentioned in my opening post. An engineer was booked to visit this afternoon but nobody came to my house. Instead they must have found the fault at the cabinet or something because the status of my fault has now changed to "Your fault should now be fixed". I had to check that my self though. Nobody has bothered to email or phone me to inform me of this yet.

I've re-run the quiet line test and my line now seems quiet, so that's a good start. My speed test result is now showing that my upload has now jumped to 5Mbps, which is nearly as fast as I had before. My download is still stuck at 38Mbps though, so I'm not happy with that. Hopefully that will increase over the next few days. If not I'll have to mess around requesting a profile reset like I had to last time.

I really don't understand why it's not standard practice for engineers to request a profle reset after repairing any line faults that have impacted connection speed. Customers shouldn't have to wait days for their connection speed to slowly creep back up. Or as I found out last time, get stuck at a low speed and not increase. I honestly don't think the auto line speed detection thing works properly as lots of people seem to have problems with it not increasing line speed after a fault. Or at least it works far too slowly. It seems really good at reducing the speed though.

Anyway, hopefully I won't have problems with that this time. We'll see.
