ONT box

Go to solution

Does anyone know if BT is installing any 1+1 ONT boxes. https://www.openreach.com/content/dam/openreach/openreach-dam-files/images/fibre-broadband/fibre-for...
the pictures I have seen of the full fibre installations consists of an ONT box, a separate battery and a 240v plug transformer with wire going from the transformer to the battery and then into the ONT, and another cable to the router. All very messy and unsightly

BT don’t install any ONT.

Openreach will though, providing you take out FTTP Service from a CP that uses the Openreach Fibre Network.

The Casing in that link, Openreach stopped using that when they stopped using the 1+1 ONT after completely ceasing the FVA Service in favour of VoIP, which is purely the responsibility of the CP. Openreach have no involvement in it.

Openreach use 3 vendors for FTTP,

Nokia, Huawei and Adtran. Although Huawei Head Ends are being phased out and replaced with Nokia ones as the ONT’s for both are compatible on Nokia Head Ends but not Adtran.

The 3 different ONT’s are all pretty much the same, although their dimensions are slightly different.

There are newer, smaller cases available for them. Although when I was an FTTP Installer the cases were only permitted on New Sites and CST’s weren’t able to order them for use on Brownfield Sites for some reason. Although that may have now changed.

Thanks. Can you please give me the dimensions? Re: cables, 1 for power, 1 for LAN to router. Is the 3rd one for telephone, as I thought it will become digital.

Re: ONT box

Size as imjolly said above.  Sticks out about 5cm I think.

Telephone is not done through the ONT now.  It is through the router.

Power cable (I believe) is about 1.5m but you can buy dc extension leads or use a mains extension lead.

Ethernet cable supplied is about 2m but it is just a standard cat 5e/cat 6 cable so you could buy a longer one and it could, theoretically, be up to 100m.

Edit: Typing at the same time as imjolly
