Own router settings with FTTP. Can you use PPPoE or just PPPoA?

I have just got FTTP with an OpenReach Huawei single port ONT in the house and BT Smarthub. Instead of the Smarthub, I would like to feed into my existing Netgear Orbi router which is currently set up to take the VirginMedia cable broadband (with its hub set up in modem only mode). Just swapping over to the feed from the OpenReach ONT into the Orbi WAN port doesn't seem to work.

Have been referred to a BT support page http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/58748  but this page deals with non-fibre and the link to using any hub with superfast fibre is a dead end.

The settings for using own router give PPPoA as the connection protocol. Is this interchangeable with PPPoE? Both the Orbi and a load balancing router I have can deal with PPPoE but do not have an option for PPPoA.

Grateful for any suggestions.

FTTP uses PPPoE - you should just be able to connect with the standard BT username and no password.
