It shouldn't matter which ISP can change it. But now it's just going to be hassle if I have to leave BT because they won't let me change profile

with a fibre connection none of the isps can change the settings, it is openreach that set the connection for all isps, with adsl the isp can change settings but not vdsl

well the simple answer is BT only offer one option of the Openreach fibre package what other ISP's do is there choice

Standard – best overall balance between speed and stability for general internet users.
Stable – prioritise stability over speed for IPTV videoconferencing, home workers and businesses transferring data and IPTV.
Speed – prioritise speed over stability for online gamers.
