Random ping spikes BT Infinity

Hi guys,

New to the forum, but thought I'd post to see if anyone had noticed any problems with their BT Infinity that involves the following:-

  • Absolutely fine download/upload speed - 77mb/18mb or so
  • No disconnects (other than the occasional HH5 disconnect which is pretty annoying)
  • Low pings to Google - 17ms direct wired connection to my PC and 19ms via powerline adapter, which I use
  • One in every ten pings or so will either time out, or be in the high 100s/200s

I have had BT Infinity for about 14 months now and it's been great aside from the router disconnecting every once in a while, which isn't even a major gripe.  It's the random huge spurt in ping or time out that I receive.  It's mostly noticeable whilst I'm playing League of Legends, where low latency and response times are needed as it's a fast paced game.  Any lapse in connection can easily sway a game in the team's favour, so this is very annoying.  It's only been happening the last week or so, and I'm trying to avoid contacting BT themselves as I can't be bothered dealing with their scripted responses.  Things I have tried:-

  • Disconnecting router for 10 minutes or so, removing all Ethernet connections and reconnecting it
  • Disconnecting all other devices from the router, wireless and wired
  • Direct wired and powerline connections

Either way, it's relatively sporadic - sometimes I go roughly half an hour without issue (Sod's Law dictates that I am currently experience said period of bliss, albeit temporarily, most likely), but then it just returns with a vengeance and these high pings appear once every ten seconds or so.  As I said, the download and upload speeds are fine, and it'd probably be hard to notice outside games that rely on a lower latency, so can't understand where these high spikes are coming from.

Hopefully someone has some ideas.

Thanking you all in advance for your contributions.

Cheers,

Darren

Re: Random ping spikes BT Infinity

Have you tried a traceroute to the game servers? The issue may well be outside of the BT network and somewhere between the peering link and the game server.

Re: Random ping spikes BT Infinity

Considering the ping is spiking on numerous games, only more so noticeably with LoL, and also spiking when running a traceroute to Google/BBC then I can't imagine this is the issue. Thoughts?

Why don't you post the tracerts then we can see where it is happening?

Here is a ping to google.com.  Please bear in mind as this is actually a "good" spell for me at the moment.  It doesn't look like it's disconnecting MUCH but it shouldn't be doing it at all/so frequently when I pay £50 a month for the service..

Request timed out.

Ping statistics for 172.217.23.14:
Packets: Sent = 36, Received = 33, Lost = 3 (8% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 19ms, Maximum = 22ms, Average = 19ms

As you can see, the time outs are pretty sporadic and they tend to come at the most inconvenient times (Sod's Law).

Thanks for the input!

Re: Random ping spikes BT Infinity

Hey pal, i'm getting the exact same problem and i notice it on LOL as it's the only game i play on my mac. I also notice that when i play Fifa online it happens and lags the game.

Mine used to just lag out once a game or sometimes not at all. But this week it will spike to 1000ms like 10 times in a game which as you know can be massively annoying. If you've found a solution or anyone else has an idea about what to do please advise.
