Re: FTTP/FTTH installation problems

I recently applied for FTTP and was surveyed to find I needed a 170m cable run from pole to premises costing £6600+VAT. £3400 was covered by Openreach but I had to cover £2200. I declined.

Is there anyway of avoiding this cost?

I found a contractor who would dig the 170m trench for 1/3 price but BT said that Openreach would only cover work done by their contractors.

It seems as if the connection charges are pushed up artificially by Openreach to make sure the customer contribution  for Excess Construction Charges (ECC) actually pays for the last 170m.

Re: FTTP/FTTH installation problems

They used to allow people to do their own dig and duct work but people or the cowboys they used to hire to do it for them would never do it to Openreach’s specifications so in the end they had to put a stop to it as it was causing a massive headache of problems.
