Re: Switch off ONT

Go to solution

I had my Fire 1 from BT fitted yesterday and everything is fine except the mess of cabling re power adapters plugged into my power extension lead. I'd like to briefly unplug the ONT's power adapter and repostion this id then plug it back in again. Will this be OK or cause problems? I mean power outages have same effect!

You'll be fine. I unplugged mine (along with the router) to rearrange all the plugs and adapters in the sockets after I had full fibre installed a few weeks ago. I had deliberately left a socket free for the engineer to plug the ONT in to, knowing that I was going to rearrange it all after he left.

I just had to wait for the ONT to start up again and connect to the outside world, and then for the router to go through it's start up routine as well. Just took a few minutes all told and everything was fine after that

Un plugging the ONT from power is fine, just don't move the ONT itself.  As winter is now fast approaching, remember to never plug in any kind of heater to a multi-gang extender!

Precisely. My mad up double gang has a long bronze 3 core lead so not designed, I'd imagine, for anything over 500w and it's highly unlikely that my partner would use it as it is tucked away.

Re: Switch off ONT

I cannot work out without removing the clunky, boxy white multiway adapter (part of a tower version)  plugged into my 2 gang socket, whether there's enough space between its sockets for the rather bulky Smart Hub 2 mains adapter and the slimmer white ONT power adapter. Often, some are so bulky that they take up too much room for another adjacent adapter to fit in.

Not sure what you mean?  They're some of the smaller PSUs I've come across.  I have a Draytek with a similar sized PSU to the SH2 and a separate ATA plugged in as well.  No problem.

Re: Switch off ONT

The 3 gang extension socket in the picture has its sockets more widely spaced than a lot of them, partly because it has switches for each socket. Some extension sockets would have issues with the 3 power supplies shown. The answer is: choose your extension socket carefully!

Ah, good idea. Never thought of that.

@chrisjp   Nope...they fit in a non-switched four way as well.
