Originally for fibre broadband a separate modem & router were supplied but later superseded by a combined modem/router.
You can use that original modem - a Huwaei HG612 is preferred - along with a router , or a combined modem/router of your choice.
I've done both , initially using the HG612 and an Asus RT-N66u router but now use an Asus DSL-AC68U modem/router.
The HG612 modem , whilst old now , is still very usable and can be got off of eBay for £15-20.
Using your own device be it router or modem/router is often preferred as the additional useful functionality is often included.
The route you take is up to you and as mentioned there's plenty of support available on the forum for you.
What Asus router do you currently have?
