Very slow Infinity 2 speeds

Go to solution

Hello

I made a thread back in January about slow speeds on Infinity 2 and had an engineer come out and take a look, he did find a fault and the speed did bump up slightly which was still nothing near 30MB even but he did not do a DLM reset as he told me to get in touch with BT if it was still slow for a reset. Since then it seems to be getting worse and I should of posted about it sooner but been busy with a few things.

My brother who lives across the way literally as I can see his window from front living room is getting faster upload speed than my download! near enough full 70MB speed aswell so somethings surely amiss and not happy with the service currently. Since January the speeds have been pretty bad and before I got the new hub I got alot of disconnects and could not keep even a day or 2 connection time so decided to get hold of a Hub 5 to see if it was a Hub problem and to look at stats, heres a few snapshots.

This was when I had the hub 3:

13/5/14

1. Best Effort Test: -provides background information.

    Download Speed
    16.99 Mbps

0 Mbps    17.42 Mbps
Max Achievable Speed

Download speedachieved during the test was - 16.99 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speedsis 13.94 Mbps-17.42 Mbps .
 Additional Information:
IP Profile for your line is - 17.42 Mbps

2. Upstream Test: -provides background information.

    Upload Speed
    7.98 Mbps

0 Mbps    20 Mbps
Max Achievable Speed

Upload speed achieved during the test was - 7.98Mbps
 Additional Information:
Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 20 Mbps

And Hub 5 stats on 15th:

14:16
6. Data rate:    5666 / 17999
7. Maximum data rate:    5787 / 29955
8. Noise margin:    6.1 / 8.7

22:00
6. Data rate:    5666 / 17999
7. Maximum data rate:    5655 / 28716
8. Noise margin:    6.0 / 8.1
9. Line attenuation:    0.0 / 18.7
10. Signal attenuation:    0.0 / 16.1

From today (19th) at 09:35
6. Data rate:    4295 / 17999
7. Maximum data rate:    5812 / 31354
8. Noise margin:    6.5 / 8.6
9. Line attenuation:    0.0 / 18.3
10. Signal attenuation:    0.0 / 15.7

BTW Test:

1. Best Effort Test: -provides background information.

    Download Speed
    17.2 Mbps

0 Mbps    17.42 Mbps
Max Achievable Speed

Download speedachieved during the test was - 17.2 Mbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speedsis 13.94 Mbps-17.42 Mbps .
 Additional Information:
IP Profile for your line is - 17.42 Mbps

2. Upstream Test: -provides background information.

    Upload Speed
    3.74 Mbps

0 Mbps    20 Mbps
Max Achievable Speed

Upload speed achieved during the test was - 3.74Mbps
 Additional Information:
Upstream Rate IP profile on your line is - 20 Mbps

I did change out all the cables with the new ones with Hub 5 Package on 14th before install and the router gets left on to do it's thing, the engineer did fix something and it didn't seem to help. Could it be the actual phone cable itself that can be a problem? Really hoping to get this sorted if possible as it's quite frustrating at the moment.

Looks like DLM has capped your sync speed to raise your noise margin in response to disconnections.

Will see how it goes with this new hub and if i get no disconnects it might slowly pick up, I do also have a corded phone plugged in the socket aswell and to be honest it isn't exacly top of the range could it also cause issues? In the mean time if I can't see it stable with the hub 5 I will try removing it and see, as it's in at the moment with no filter just straight into the socket.

So far it's been alot more stable but speeds the same unfortunately, here's a snapshot of some of yesterdays router stats:

10:43:
5. VDSL uptime:    2 days, 13:57:21
6. Data rate:    4296 / 17999
7. Maximum data rate:    5684 / 31444
8. Noise margin:    6.3 / 8.6
9. Line attenuation:    0.0 / 18.5
10. Signal attenuation:    0.0 / 15.8

14:17:
5. VDSL uptime:    2 days, 17:32:46
6. Data rate:    4296 / 17999
7. Maximum data rate:    5692 / 29329
8. Noise margin:    6.4 / 8.2
9. Line attenuation:    0.0 / 18.5
10. Signal attenuation:    0.0 / 15.8

19:00:
5. VDSL uptime:    2 days, 22:12:50
6. Data rate:    4296 / 17999
7. Maximum data rate:    5539 / 29034
8. Noise margin:    6.2 / 8.1
9. Line attenuation:    0.0 / 18.5
10. Signal attenuation:    0.0 / 15.8

21:30:
5. VDSL uptime:    3 days, 00:47:37
6. Data rate:    4296 / 17999
7. Maximum data rate:    5379 / 29301
8. Noise margin:    6.0 / 7.9
9. Line attenuation:    0.0 / 18.5
10. Signal attenuation:    0.0 / 15.8

and current 23/5/14, 12:02:

5. VDSL uptime:    3 days, 15:17:11
6. Data rate:    4296 / 17999
7. Maximum data rate:    5718 / 31855
8. Noise margin:    6.4 / 8.5
9. Line attenuation:    0.0 / 18.5
10. Signal attenuation:    0.0 / 15.8

Noise margin seems to be worse early hours but no idea how long it's going to take to pick up again though or if at all like this but don't really fancy months more of waiting to see it might not have changed stuck at 17MB speeds. Hopefully I can atleast notice the profile changing then it's not so bad, hopefully it's not stuck.

Re: Very slow Infinity 2 speeds

Quick Update, corded phone has been unplugged since before the stability to rule it out and I'm not using the white openreach modem which was rebooting which I think was what bombed my DLM on the line and it's upto 8 days stable currently although no change yet on the data rate.

5. VDSL uptime:    8 days, 15:31:38
6. Data rate:    4296 / 17999
7. Maximum data rate:    5829 / 32727
8. Noise margin:    6.8 / 8.5

Even if the resets hammered the DLM can it still pull back up from the worst or if deemed stable would need a reset? Also just curious, on Infinity 2 wouldn't the Maximum data rate be in the 50-60-70000 area or did the DLM cap it down and will that go up again if no errors?

Good News

Boost engineer just finished sorting out the line, mentioned twisted pairs or something. Here's the current stats:

5. VDSL uptime:    0 days, 00:10:13
6. Data rate:    15094 / 51333
7. Maximum data rate:    15157 / 51235
8. Noise margin:    6.1 / 6.6
9. Line attenuation:    0.0 / 18.3
10. Signal attenuation:    0.0 / 18.2

Looking much better, seems to have sorted out the problem very happy with the engineer service and nice to have it fixed after months of issues 🙂
