can i use the bt home hub as a modem?

hi i was thinking of using an asus router and a modem to connect to my network can i use the bt home hub 5 as a modem only?

No.  Hubs don't do modem only.

If you want a modem then you could get a used Openreach one from the auction site, or buy a new one.  There is only 1 true ADSL/VDSL modem, the DrayTek Vigor 130.  The only other new alternative is the Netgear DM200, it's actually a router, having DHCP and NAT but can be put in modem mode.  Of the two the DrayTek is the better option and needs no setting up, it just works right out of the box.
