Re: planning to get myself an unlocked openreach modem

Main benefit I think is you can get the stats from the modem if it is unlocked and LAN2 cabled back to router. And using a seperate modem tends to hold the line better than an integrated router/modem (HH5 specifically).

Re: planning to get myself an unlocked openreach modem

is there anything that can be switched off on an unlocked modem to get the line to not disconnect or is it my homehub that is telling the separate modem to do a PPP LCP Send Termination Request [User request]

Re: planning to get myself an unlocked openreach modem

Why hullo beadiesthawk! The ppp layer of the network stack (point to point protocol) is handled by the router; the HH5 in your case. A separate Openreach modem whether the ECI or the HG is normally configured in Ethernet bridge mode. And the PPP layer sits on top of that.

For testing you can remove the HH5 and use your PCs network stack to handle that ppp layer. There's a configuration option for doing so in the Windows network connectoid wizard.

Re: planning to get myself an unlocked openreach modem

To make a direct connection from your PC to the modem which will eliminate the homehub. Follow this guide to do that. Use your computer as normal to see if any problems you had have been eliminated without the Homehub.

Step 1: Remove the homehub from the modem

Step2: Connect your pc/laptop into the modem using LAN1 port

Step3: Open network and sharing centre on windows and click set up a new connection or network

Step4: Connect to the internet then click make a new connection Broadband PPPoE

Step5: Username bthomehub@btbroadband.com and the password as BT

Step6: connect, If it doesn't,keep pressing try again until it does.

Re: planning to get myself an unlocked openreach modem

I'm pretty much used to using the unlocked eci/r abd just like Ray said it performs the best out of the two on  my  eci street box line.

The Unlocked eci/r is a bit quicker and the errors are almost  non existent.

The line is always "fast" mode and the last time it had a loss of connection is when work was being done at the street box.

I also really like my  unlocked  HG612 3b  is  very easy  to use a first and has the nice graphing options - The line just perfers the eci/r.

I wouldn't go back to using a standard modem or the hub's  as I'd miss the stats. πŸ™‚

Re: planning to get myself an unlocked openreach modem

Barry57,

Is there an "easy" way to unlock the ECI??

Everything I've read involves clothes pegs, wires and USB plugs !!

Since plugging my ECI modem in and using the HH5 purley as a router, the connection has been solid for 2 days 7 hours up to now - it was rebooting every evening.

I wonder how long it will take DLM to reinstate my IP profile ??  It's 63 at present, but was 76 for about 6 months prior to the HH5 having a hissy fit.
