return from Plusnet and routing

I have just returned from Plusnet to BT Infinity.  Now on 40/10.  All going pretty much as it should, internet and HH5a behaving.

Still one curiosity that has not been changed since I left BT about 1 year ago.  Why does BT internal routing send all traffic from Winchester via Sheffield to London area before it leaves the BT network?  This adds around 8ms to latency, around 4ms each way.
