Mobile number changing without it being requested - and phone ceasing to function as a phone

My mums phone number ceased yesterday too for an unknown reason.

No requests to port or cancel came from mum.

A quick call to BT and after updating settings it all worked again.

If I tried to call the number the automated voice gave the impression that the number had been disconnected.

Strange.

Can you confirm whether is a mobile number or landline number which has been ceased?
