SIM activation - national issue from Wednesday, still outstanding?

With purchase of new phone, OH requested new SIM card from BT. This arrived Wednesday, and activation process online was done early Wed evening. 

SIM wasn't activated by Thursday morning, so I spent time on three online chat sessions, two of whom faithfully promised me the SIM would be activated by the end of the day, and one who hung up the chat on me without attempting to help

I've called BT's 0800 help number this morning, to be told that it's a national issue affecting all SIM activations from Wed, and that there's no timescale for resolution. So that's about 30 hours so far for a SIM activation that should take a few minutes....

Anyone else in the same boat?
