Sim only - how long before I need to activate?

My contract runs out with EE on 2nd April. I want to get a sim only plan with BT and also want to take advantage of the BT reward card currently on offer. Can I order the sim now and keep,it till I’m ready to change over? How long do I get? Can’t find the answer anywhere. Thanks.
