Unencrypted BT Sport Europe via freesat

Go to solution

I've heard that BT Sport Europe will be unencrypted on Wednesday night for the Europa League Final.  Does this mean it will be available via Freesat for the duration?

Hi @PF77 Welcome to the forum and thanks for posting.

We're showing Liverpool v Sevilla in the UEFA Europa League final tonight. As agreed, with UEFA, we're showing it free to millions on Sky, Freeview, BT TV, Virgin Media, BT.com and even on YouTube.

Cheers

John

PF77,

It will definitely not be on Freesat as it would be too expensive to do for a channel that can be received in so many other ways. The channel would need to be allocated a channel number by Freesat on their EPG and the encryption would need to be turned off by Sky for the duration of the match.  A Freesat TV EPG slot costs £30k and Sky ain't going to fiddle with the encryption parameters for free.

Then there's the problem of piracy of a top-flight match being on an unencrypted satellite channel.  And there's the certainty of egg-on-face bad press if the temporary setup goes wrong or isn't completed on time.
