Re: bt sports app on windows

What on earth is the " back end". That contribution is less than useful, and just about sums up BT's unwillingness to be clear in their dealing with customers. At least this looks like an acknowledgement that BT made the decision not to support the app in Windows any longer. I've had the usual lack of straightforwardness from BT customer service this week  with one adviser telling me he had "no idea why Microsoft had stopped supporting the app".

If the app was "significantly behind" other methods of accessing BT sport  how come it worked, when the alternative offered doesn't?

I'll try Opera, but don't  hold out much hope. The fact that BT can't deliver a feed that gives a reliable stream to all customers should be a source of shame to the company. It's like the internet in the Third World.

For a comms company the service is truly shocking.

Re: bt sports app on windows

BT Sport runs at twice the frame rate as most other video streaming services. Turns out some web browsers aren't using the hardware properly to play the video, so struggle to keep up - worth noting that most users aren't experiencing any issues.

We have a fix in development that will recognise when the device is struggling to keep up and lower the quality to one that it can play smoothly. We can't rush it out though, as we risk ruining the experience for everyone else.

Regarding "back end" - we're moving to a new authentication model across all BT and EE services. ALL services MUST migrate, as the old authentication is being switched off - we're only as strong as our weakest link. It would have been a lot of work to update the old Windows app to use it, and we don't have the resource to do it. We've entered our final year of BT Sport development as everything moves over to Warner Bros Discovery next year. The new authentication is also required to enable us to provide BT Sport subscribers with access to the Discovery+ app, which should be available soon and will offer another way for you to watch BT Sport.

I hope that provides enough information for you. I can only apologise for the interruption in service for some users. Things should get better soon.

Thank you for your post.  Asa comms company not providing the service required is not good optics. Hope that someone at BT is breaking their neck to effect a n improvement.

@DarrenDev :

“We've entered our final year of BT Sport development as everything moves over to Warner Bros Discovery next year.”

Which devices and/or browsers will support this new WB app? Will there be any changes to the services offered by BT when that move happens?

Will the “fix” reduce quality to a level worse than the original app, if it’s called into action?

It would also be useful if you would post a list of browsers with which “most users aren’t experiencing any issues”. That could save other users a lot of wasted time and aggravation. For example, from the comment posted here (and personal experience), it seems that Firefox is not a good choice.

Good points. Information on the browsers with which most users aren't  experiencing any problems would be very helpful. Great quality isn't any use if the available technology can't deliver it to every customer.

We have no insight into what is going to happen with Discovery+. You can view their currently supported platforms on their web site.
It's not just about the browser - it's the browser on specific versions of Windows, with specific hardware. E.g. we know of builds of Edge that have hardware acceleration disabled when on specific builds of Windows 10 when used on hardware with specific GPUs. Our stats don't allow us to see that level of detail, for us to be able to advise you of the combinations.
