A perhaps strange and belated question, to which I hope someone can give me a definitive answer or direct me to where the answer would be.
I have been a BT broadband and telephone customer for about 11 years. I started when I moved to my current house, and that was the first time I'd ever had broadband (I was on "dial-up" internet at my previous house). When I started, I was sent a "BT Home Hub 2.0", which presumably was the current version at that time (2008) and which I was told was "free". I used that for a number of years, until it failed in 2015 and I bought a newer Home Hub myself which has worked fine up to now. I was going to throw the old Home Hub out, but a friend who is a long-time BT customer said that it is BT property and they might want it back so I should hold on to it.
So my question is, simply: Am I at liberty to throw the old, failed Home Hub away, or does BT have a "claim" to it?

Nope, they're yours to keep, especially if you bought it yourself!
They own the Complete Wi-Fi disks, but that's it.
Obviously if you bought your own Homehub it is your property and not BTs. As regards Homehubs that BT sent to you as part of your minimum term contract, if you are out of your minimum term the Homehub belongs to you. If you want to recycle it you can contact BT and ask for a recycle bag to be sent to you or you could take it to your local recycle centre.
If BT replace a hub for you then they will send a packet to return the old one for recycling. If you don't want to then you don't need to.
Many thanks for such quick replies. It then sounds as if I can ditch the old one - it is only too easy these days, and especially at my age (!), to accumulate obsolete stuff.
As a manufacturer of Electrical and Electronic Equipment [EEE], BT is required to provide a means to allow users to dispose of unwanted/End of Life [EoL] equipment. This is under the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive (WEEE Directive).

As mentioned by others, BT can provide a pre-paid returns bag for any unwanted BT equipment.
As the originator of this thread, I thought that to give some closure I'd update for anyone who is interested or to whom it is relevant.
I did look at the link provided above by Darren_B for how to return electrical items to BT, but was somewhat confused by the statement near the bottom of the article saying "We're not responsible for the costs of returning items.". This seemed to be at variance with BT providing postage-prepaid bags. Maybe I didn't read the context properly, or maybe it referred specifically to cases where customers weren't provided with the item by BT as part of BT providing a service, but bought an item, albeit BT-supplied, independently.
Anyway, in the event, when I recently upgraded to Fibre for my broadband, BT sent me a new Hub. Inside the box, among other items was a green postage-prepaid bag for return of old Hubs. There were very clear instructions on the bag, and I followed them "to the letter" this afternoon with my old Hub. Basically you protectively-wrap the old Hub, and its power-cable, put them in the green bag, stick a "barcode label" onto the bag (this is a detachable part of the address label used when they delivered the new kit to you), take it to the Post Office, and get a receipt. When I took my bag into the Post Office, the lady who served me immediately knew what it was for, took the package from me, and gave me a receipt.
There has recently been, in a separate "thread", discussion about recent changes in BT's Terms & Conditions; that probably results in this subject being more important than it previously was.
I'm trying to follow the instructions but I don't have a bar code saying 'lift here to return'. I'm guessing that might have been on the outer packaging / plastic wrap that the two boxes were delivered in which of course I throw out as I didn't realise there was anything important on the front of it.
Am I ok to just put my address on the front of the green postage-prepaid bag?
I have recently received a Smart hub 2 to replace my Home Hub 5 which I have been using for some years. I found the green bag but no return label. I tried to look online in vain for some time searching for a way to get a return label. Lots of articles about that BT would provide one, but no actual link to create one or ask for one.
Meanwhile I have seen some selling their old home hubs on ebay and such. Is this allowed?
