Failed Speed Boost when placing an online order

So, on 22 June 2025 I checked my BT account and saw that I could 'upgrade' my current 100mb package to the same product and reduce my monthly bill. Excellent.

Oh, and a little yellow banner saying that this would also give me a months speed boost to 500mb. My 100mb service has been rock solid at 150mb (wired ethernet on devices) but that would be a nice idea, at least I can see if I can get the same stability at 500mb.

Order placed. Activated. No speed boost.

Waited a day or two. No speed boost.

Rang BT and got mixed answers from Guides:-

1. the offer was only for new customers - - but why was it offered to me as an existing customer upgrading?

2. the speed boost will only activate once I am out of the 14 day cooling off period.

Today, 11 July 2025 well out of the cooling off period, I rang BT again. Very helpful Guide went away and checked. He came back and said I was eligible but he could not activate the boost manually. He checked again and said it was not possible to add this as it is done at the point of sale when you click the order accept button.

Hmmm.... I did say that whereas this is not a serious issue it does marr the fact that offers are made and not honoured.

Re: Failed Speed Boost when placing an online order

If it clearly states the speed boost in your email from BT when you "upgraded" your package you should contact BT Billing 0330.1234.150 and lodge a complaint that this has not been given.

As an aside, if everything is good on the 100 package there should be no issues on the 500 as it is all using the same infrastructure. You might however find a "bottle neck" with some of your devices if they are not able to manage the additional speed.

Re: Failed Speed Boost when placing an online order

Unless you're getting close to your 100mbps limit, there's no real need to go faster because you won't notice a significant jump in perceived speed but the extra bandwidth will allow you to do more at once....

For example, we maxed out our 120mbps connection with streaming and gaming etc so we stepped up to 500 Mbps to stop that happening... TBF 200mbps would have been enough really...
