Doesn't seem like you gave much thought before drafting that lofty reply. 'Legacy' email was clearly mentioned.

You need to appreciate that the needs and circumstances of others may be very different to your own. Empathy.

I don't think I've been ranting at people on this forum.  I raised it here because (a) someone might have experience of getting round my problem so that I can go back to BT and ask for whatever was done for them; (b) someone from BT might read what is posted here and that might give a greater impetus to BT finding and offering a solution.
