Made redundant

We are in a bad situation. Basically through redundancy we can’t afford the £60 a month we’re paying for broadband. We have contacted bt and explained our situation. They have offered £6 per month reduction. We understand we have a contract with them, but why are they being so unhelpful and difficult? We have being bt customers for 20 years or more, paid our bill by direct debit without fail every month and they refuse to offer any help. Eg a reduced broadband speed. We will have no option but to cancel the dd and see if they want to take us to court for unpaid bills, caused through redundancy. We have a 20 year track record of paying on time without fail. Any advice appreciated
