I upgraded to fibre some time ago, but I've still got my homehub 4 adsl modem. Can I still get a return bag for it, or do I need to take it to council or otherwise recycling to get rid of it?

You could ask for a return bag, but BT would only scrap it, so its easier to recycle it locally, at a council site, or any branch of Currys/PC World, as they have special cages for all electronic kit. They used to give a £5 voucher, but I think they stopped that recently.
Even an EE store should have a suitable recycle bin or cage.

Re: returning old equipment (i.e HomeHub 4)
I took some equipment back to Curries a week ago and got a £5 voucher. Still doing it.
