Re: BT Wifi/Fon keeps reactivating

I suspect that your problem is because when your hub has a new firmware update this is effectively restoring the hub to the "factory condition" which has the BTWifi signal turned on by default even although you are Opted out.  (The Opt out removes your BTID/BTWifi user name from the database preventing you using BTWifi hotspots and should have a "turn off" signal sent to your hub but as it has already been sent it does not do it again.)

In order to get it turned off you will probably have to Opt out of BTWifi again which can take up to 28 days from your Opt out date for it to be turned off on the hub.

(See moderators post in this thread  https://community.bt.com/t5/Broadband-Extras-from-BT/Requesting-help-disabling-BT-WIFI/td-p/1695909 )

I think the reason that you can not turn it off on the hub yourself will be because as has already been pointed out you are automatically Opted in to BTWifi. This means you can use BTWifi hotspots when out and about. As an "agreement" for being able to use the hotspots your hub has to transmit the BTWifi signal.

If you were able to turn the BTWifi signal off at the hub, you would still be able to use BTWifi hotspots without "living up to your part of the "agreement" of having your hub transmit the BTWifi signal.

BT would have no way of knowing if you have turned it off. This is the case when you use a third party router, BT have no idea that you are using it and as such you can still use BTWifi.

I doubt that BT will change and give users the ability to turn off BTWifi at the hub because I suspect that many users would probably do that but still use BTWifi hotspots.

Re: BT Wifi/Fon keeps reactivating

Hi @Clowny,

I suspect what @gg30340 has said is correct and the new firmware update has set the Hub back to default. If you have Opted out of BT WiFi previously it will normally correct itself automatically after a few days and stop broadcasting the BT WiFi SSID.

If you like, I'll be able to take a look at this for you. Please can you send me in your details using the "Contact The Mods" link found in my profile?

Thanks

Re: BT Wifi/Fon keeps reactivating

Thanks gents for the useful replies, I now understand that it's going to happen every time the router firmware updates and although a fix would be nice - unlikely to happen.

Paddy, I'll drop you a line with my details as I'm unsure how the opting out procedure works. My Check the Status states I'm opted out and I clicked opt out again but it doesn't seem to have done anything as they are still broadcasting almost a week later. So, I wondered if it's a toggle procedure and I need to opt-in and then out again, however there is no option to opt back in!

In another life I was a software engineer and it would be straight forward enough for BT to include another check in their firmware update checking routines to validate a non-standard router or opting out of the programme however, that is unlikely to happen as it's hardly a criticial issue or one that affects enough people to become one.

Thanks for the help

Re: BT Wifi/Fon keeps reactivating

I think this might help in understanding why BT WiFi/Fon activates in all hubs:

  1. BT Home hubs are set to broadcast BT WiFi as a default and the User has to Opt Out to stop this. So if a User conducts a Factory Reset (not Hub Restart) then the hub will start broadcasting the BT WiFi regardless whether Opted Out. You will have to go though the process of Opting Out again!
  2. HH6 had a firmware glitch on it's debut so it did not transmit BT WiFi as a default BUT Firmware 0223E fixed this issue (shame).
  3. When any Home Hub restarts (while the User being Opted Out of BT Wifi) then the hub should NOT default.
  4. Firmare upgrades usually Restart the Hub and NOT Reset to Factory Default. This can easily confirmed because all the User settings are maintained where as Factory Reset will delete all User settings.

Re: BT Wifi/Fon keeps reactivating

The firmware upgrade was definitely the culprit in my case, 23rd December the networks started broadcasting again with me being opted out for a number of years.

If I could find the "Contact a Mod" link in Paddy's profile I'd send him my details! Must be going blind or something

Re: BT Wifi/Fon keeps reactivating

Hi @Clowny Sorry you can't find the link on @PaddyB's profile. I have enabled it for you on mine. You may not see the link on some Mobile devices.

Cheers

John

Re: BT Wifi/Fon keeps reactivating

Adding to the above.

I've just signed up to a new contract and upgraded to Infinity 2

My Hotspots were re-enabled even though BT WIFI on my account is opted out.

The Broadband Tech team were of no use when I called. The "specialist" keeps insisting that my hub is not broadcasting a hotspot, even though I can see hotspot SSIDs associated with the router's wireless MAC address.

Waiting for a callback.

Why are BT so difficult to deal with?

Re: BT Wifi/Fon keeps reactivating

Update to my post:

I’ve found a solution.

After contacting the Broadband Tech team at the start of the day. I spoke to a far more willing member of the team. Although he was unable to explain why the hotspots had been re-instated, despite my account being shown **bleep** “opted out”, he agreed to cycle the status of my account (opt in, then opt out again). 24 hrs later, the hotspots were gone.

Theory (mine, not endorsed or confirmed by BT)

  1. The configuration of the BT home hub is actually managed by BT Openreach and not BT Residential.
  2. When I renewed my contract and upgraded to Infinity 2, the hub was automatically reconfigured and the BT WiFi status set to “enabled” – the default setting.
  3. Cycling the opt in/out status causes the BT Residential systems to pass a message to the BT Openreach systems, resulting in the hub being reconfigured to drop the hotspots.

Anyway, it appears that cycling the WiFi opt-in/opt out status did the trick.

What is most annoying is that the BT Broadband Tech team insisted that WiFi was disabled on my router, even though it clearly was not.

You can easily check the status of the Wi-Fi Hotspots by typing http://bthomehub.home/ and check the BT Wi-Fi Status. If it says “yes” the Hotspot is enabled. If it says “Not active on your home hub” the hotspot is disabled.

Re: BT Wifi/Fon keeps reactivating

the home hub and its configuration is nothing to do with Openreach it is a BT residential item and supplied by them and when you move from one infinity package to another there is no change to the hub configuration everything is done at cabinet level by BT Wholesale

Re: BT Wifi/Fon keeps reactivating

To be honest, the whole process is painful - three months later and I still haven't managed to get the configuration of the hub changed to get these switched off.

Annoys me that opting out of a forced opt in process is so difficult, why it simply couldn't be a on hub option as it's obvious that the hub "phones home" for firmware status etc.
