I have installed the new version from MyBt but every time I run a scan using BT Virus Protect my MAC crashes and a report is sent to Apple. Is that common as well?

With regard to your specific question, I can run a full scan without it crashing. I have run full scans several times over the past four weeks and there has been to problems.
This has now been going for so long and still has not been sorted out. How much longer is this going to take and how much compensation are you going to give everyone for not being able to use Mcafee properly as we are paying for only part of the product ?
