The only thing I an think of left is a change to your local transmitter that has increased the signal to a point where the tuners can't cope. I don't recall ever reading about the symptoms you have but in the absence of alternatives, it may be worth trying a variable attenuator on the aerial. You can get them from Amazon for a few pounds, just make sure you don't get one with F connectors.

The plays up whatever channel I'm on.

Intermittent snowy screen gets more frequent, with the odd flash of purple screen and also black, then I lose sound, and then it loses broadband connection and then the fan kicks in at max.

Yeah always had an attenuator.

BT engineer due Saturday, had enough of it.
