BT Webmail Work Arounds.

The following are some work arounds or changes that are in the BTMail webpage which may help you until such time as BT roll out the "update" to fix some of the issues that are in the new email interface.

Please to not use this thread to add issues/complaints or other problemsThere is already a thread running for that and BT are monitoring it and taking note of new issues.

Moving emails to folders:

Single click in the box to the left of the email which selects the email without opening it, then go to either "Move to" or "More" in the menu bar at the top of the list and select what you want to do with it or drag and drop it in the relevant folder.

Turn Off Coloured Icons

You can turn off the "coloured" squares by going into the settings found by clicking on your username at the top right then click on settings then Mail in the left hand column then untick the box "show avatar in the message list".

Turn On/Off Images

You can turn on or off image loading or select only to load from certain users in the BTMail settings although this appears to be a bit intermittent and is turned back on for some users.

Log onto your email account using a browser not an email app and go to the settings by clicking on your user name at the top right then go to  "Mail" in the left hand column and then to "Block Images". If it not already selected tick the box marked "Allow all Images" then click on save.

Just in case you are not aware, you can not get hacked just by opening an email,  it is also very unlikely that you will get a virus or malware just by opening a spam email. Almost all viruses, like Trojans and worms, are activated when you download an attachment or click a link present in an email.

By only opening the spam email the spammers would only be able to find out that you have opened the email in the same way as any genuine emailer could if you have automatic image loading turned on. I am not going to go into details how that happens but if you are interested just do an Internet search.

They may be able to see:

Your location.

Your Internet service provider or mobile company.

Device you used to open the email.

Operating system you’re using.

Email client you’re using.

Web browser you’re using.

and therefore the spammer would know that the email address is active and could of course decide to send more spam to that email address.

Using Rich Text

If your emails are not formatting correctly it could be that you are using Plain Text Format instead of Rich Text format.

Log onto your email account and click on your user name at the top right. Select "settings" then click on "Mail" in the left hand column.

In the "General Settings" section make sure that the box "Compose messages in Rich Text Format" is ticked then click "Save".

Deleting Multiple Emails

Deleting multiple emails has been posted on the forum many times already as have most of your other comments.

If you want to delete multiple emails try the following.

If you hold down the shift key then tick the box to the left of the first email you want to delete in the list of emails then scroll down using the scroll bar on the right hand side or use the PgDown key and tick the last email you want to delete then release the shift key. It will select all the emails in between. You can then click delete or drag and drop them into the Trash folder.

Setting appointment time calendar

Reference the appointment time,. If you click on the time box you can edit it to what ever time you want or once you have selected the half hourly time you can click on it and edit it to your chosen time

Open an Email

You do not need to "rapid clicking" to open it, double clicking on the email in the list will open and has always opened a new window with the email in it. This also happened in the "old" webmail interface.

If you want to "manage" the email in that window go to the two arrow icons at the right hand side and it will give a you a menu of the functions to reply move etc.

If you want to select the email in order to move it or use some of the functions in the menu bar, single click on the box to the left of the email in the list. This selects the email but does not open it. It will howver show in the “Preview Pane” if you have that selected.

Hover Mouse Senders Name

If you hover the mouse just below the senders name it will show you what email address it originated from in the same way as the "old" email interface did. When you hover your mouse the pointer will change to a "hand pointing" when you hover over the viewable spot. This will not work if the name is an email address rather than a name.

If you want to view the full source of the email select the email with a signal click the box to the left of the email in the list. This will not open the email and you then go to "More" in the menu bar and then "View Source".

If you are concerned that it is opening a preview I would suggest that you select the no preview option and again the preview options are exactly the same as the "old" interface.

Select Unread Emails

If you are having problems seeing what emails are read you can sort them into read and unread by clicking on the three bar upside down triangle icon at the right hand side of the email list.

Mark as Read or Unread

If you want to change an email to either read of unread in your email list you need to select the email by clicking once on the box to the left of the email in the list then go to "More" in the menu bar at the top of the list and scroll down to either "Mark as Read" or "Mark as Unread" and click on it.

Or you could hover over the white space to the right of the date and click on the eye icon to toggle the mail between read and unread which appears when you hover there.

Unable to Open Emails

Try logging out of your email account then clear the history and cookies from your browser then close and reopen the browser and then log back on to your email account and try opening an email.

Composing emails

Line spacing when composing an email – the gap between lines when composing does not show once the message is sent.

When replying to a message, the font size changes if you click line 2 and 3. A possible work around for this is to press return to get to line 2/3 then start to compose your email.

Group Contacts

As a work around, the only way to send to a distribution group is to actually click on the word TO or CC or BBC and locate the group in the address book which will open when you click on TO etc.

Distribution groups don’t show in the left hand menu on contacts they are all mixed in with your regular contacts.

To add them to an email select the Group in your contacts list as per the above then click on the "Send Mail" icon at the top of the box that opened showing the Group or if you start to compose a new email you can click on the word "To" and this will open a drop down box with all your contacts and groups in it. Just select the one you want by clicking on it the click on the "Select" button.
