Re: BT tell me I must change my POP3 protocol to IMAP NOW! Why?

I have a complaint no. and although this BT techie seems to know a little, he doesn't seem to have much experience of Outlook (which BT of course will tell you they aren't required to know being a third party operator).

I checked the contact phone no. he is still representing BT in his threats to withdraw further support if I don't comply with their recommendations to move to IMAP.

I refused remote access and am capable of setting up stuff when instructed.

You need to remove the contact details that you have posted. It is against forum rules to post any ones contact details.

Could anyone advise if:

1. I can continue with POP3 on Outlook 2010 and remove this IMAP server 'idiotic state' I find myself.?

2. Is BT Yahoo being withdrawn, therefore my emails will not synchronise to my Outlook and what are the options if that is the case?

A big thank you to  anyone who has  taken time to respond so far.

As I have already posted, you are advised NOT to have IMAP and POP3 accessing the same email account on the same email client as it can cause problems, which it would appear you have now found out first hand.

BTYahoo is not at present being with drawn and even if it was your account would be migrated to any new email system that was to replace it so you would still have access to your emails via Outlook.

Based on what you have been told so far, the person you are dealing with in my opinion does not appear to be very knowledgeable with the BT email system or any email system for that matter.

Re: BT tell me I must change my POP3 protocol to IMAP NOW! Why?

Thanks, I have taken note of your comments.

Could you tell me what action I need to take now to disentangle this mess. ie remove IMAP from my email account and restore POP3 as my default account.

If BT have set this up at their end would I be right in assuming that I simply delete it in my  Outlook email setup and POP3 will be restored once I restore it as my default email account?

Thanks for bearing with me on this.

Hi.

If you've got both setup in Outlook, all you need to do is delete the one that uses IMAP. BT will not have done anything as there was nothing for them to do. IMAP or POP3 access is just a different way of accessing the emails.

Note you can't change an Outlook account from IMAP to POP3 or visa versa.

Were you actually told this? If so this is complete and utter nonsense and needs investigating.

Absolutely, never let BT have remove access to your computer

Re: BT tell me I must change my POP3 protocol to IMAP NOW! Why?

The threat was real to me in that he emphasised that point of issue. Further support would/could not be provided by BT if I chose to continue to use POP3 with Outlook. Hence my agreement to give IMAP a try.

I never have, but the fact that on this occasion the customer support adviser wanted access when he called me  up re just opening a new email account on IMAP.

BT don't and never have provided 'support' for any mail client, POP3 or IMAP. All that means is that that can't/won't help with problems it doesn't mean that they don't provide POP3/IMAP capability. Support and capability are 2 entirely different things.

Thanks.

Sos, I meant email address not Outlook account.

I will terminate this nonsense on my setup asap.
