Re: Can't send emails but can receive using Thunderbird and BT address and server

BTW, can;t send via the Hotmail address either now, so something is clearly wrong. The only way to send emails is via the BTwebmail page, which I dislike as it's so messy and cluttered.

Give Claws mail a whirl, at least it will prove if it is a Thunderbird problem or BT problem. You can install it without removing Thunderbiird, just don't run them both at the same time.

Thanks Andy, you have set out the server informaton clearly, and i can now look to see if the settings are correct.  A friend of a friend has offered to remove Thunderbird and reinstall it for me, - slightly nervous about this, as i have lots of emails and contacts, stored infolders, but i have spent today saving and filing.

I'll take the information you have outlined re the server settings, and post the results after the reinstall has been done.

Hi again.

I certainly don't recommend removing Thunderbird and re-installing.

However, if you've still got it and not done so already - the folder to backup is found by looking at Help/Troubleshooting Information. The Open folder button will open explorer and show where the current profile is stored. You can simply copy the whole of that folder (a mixture of numbers/letters DOT default) to elsewhere on your computer (and usb chip too).

This contains the whole of your Thunderbird settings/accounts and emails.

(It is quite straightforward to copy this folder back again after re-installing TB).

That's a good idea, as long as the "Keep message on server" is set to stop claws mail downloading new emails into Claws "only".

Hmm, I wonder if you have Thunderbird setup to send BTmail via the hotmail/outlook SMTP server and it is a problem with that server rather than the BT one.

Thanks for all the suggestons, including the Claws option.  I'll make sure that the person who is looking at the laptop today, sees your contributions and takes the on board.

Wish me luck!

Re: Can't send emails but can receive using Thunderbird and BT address and server

A new week, the same problem.   We have discovered that:

The settings on the outgoing server are correct for each of the email addresses

But they are displayed as a list, with mail.btinternet.com the default, and the hotmail (SMTP-mail.outlook.com) as the option below in the list)

We set up a different email manager, leaving Thunderbird on the laptop, but bypassing it. We used Opera, because the friend who was helping me is familiar with that.  I still couldn't send using Opera, but could receive.

The friend then went into to his laptop, isgning in as me, with everything the same as i usually do - he could send and receive emails via Thunderbird for both email addresses.

So we have concluded that the problem must lie within my pc,-  perhaps Windows 10, as my friend uses Windows 8. As i mentioned before, my husband also uses Windows 10, and a BT email addresses which he accesses via Thunderbird.

Do you think that conclusion is correct?  And if so, should I run a Windows 10 trouobleshooter, - I've seen them on Microsoft but not sure whether these will help.
